Apologies to those who may have read this on uk.media.dvd, but....

I've just bought the two UFO box sets from HMV at Cambridge. Both were
shrinkwrapped and I thought I'd got a bargain at £19.99 each. How wrong I was !

Got them home and found that one of the booklets was missing, the other badly
torn. All the discs were in the 'wrong place' in the case, and most were
scratched. The gatefold sleeves were covered in marks and scuffs. It almost
looks as though some one has taken them home and watched them all, then taken
them back to the shop. HMV say this must have happened 'at the warehouse' as
they don't have shrink wrapping facilities at the shop. Fair play to HMV, I
rang them and I can return the discs, but it's the hassle factor. I'm 20 miles
from Cambridge, and it costs a fortune to park, and I can't get back there
    until a week on Monday

Probably not down to HMV but down to carlton. They Used to do it all of the time, basically they are refurbished returns. They use a load of box sets to get one good one, by taking the discs out of one the book out of another etc. Doubt they are actually second hand but they would have been sent back by suppliers who open the boxes and put empty boxs on the shelves.

If that's what they are, shouldn't they be clearly labelled as such?

If carlotn are sending them to HMV like that then HMV have no knowledge of the fact, so cabt do owt about it.

In theory carlton are selling new product so dont have to do anything about it

Hmm. Not sure I agree with you there. If you bought a new TV, but then once you'd got it home, you found someone had already had it, tried it, didn't like it and scribbled in the manual, and sent it back to the shop, where it was sold as new again, you be a bit ticked off, no?
Anyway, what the hell, HMV are going to change the discs.
