 Whats up with the full on 10 minute load times between parts of the main game?

It totally spoils the mood as it pauses the game for so long to load the next bit of the game!

Thats my only gripe, but its a big problem. It spoils the fluidity of the game.

Is this the way all games are going to go in the future?

Doom 3 wasnt that bad with only some loading between stages. But hl2 loads bits of the city at a time.
I would rather it take longer to load the full city than wait for it to load many times for smaller parts.

    Ten minute load times?

Are you sure there isn't something wrong with your PC?

My loads are about 10 secs and I only have 512megs of PC2700 RAM.

Doesn't bother me as each section is usually pretty cool. Would be nice though if it had the seamlessness of other games.

With other games like this in the past I have given up playing them after a while.
Long load times really kill a game no matter how good the actual gameplay is.
Hope on my high spec machine the load times are decent!

Yup - I'm getting 1.5 mins loading time to main menu, 1.5 mins to load a saved game, and about the same again mid-level loading.

I've got a SATA HDD, but I just don't think it's set up properly - is there anyone on here who could help?

For a start, the load times for HL2, Sims 2, and Doom 3 (my mates are getting 10 second mid-level load times on HL2 with ATA drives), plus I just ran SiSoft Sandra and the benchmark for my HDD is:

26057kb/s, with a comparable SATA drive on the pull-down list running at ~60000kb/s

Christ knows what's up with it, but it's ruining any gaming :(

I had a 2min load time to the main menu first time I started HL2 up, it's now about 30 secs till it gets to the main menu now. Quite average 7200rpm 80gb Seagate Baracuda.

Load time in game is 15 secs, saving takes 2 secs. Just enough time to take a bite of cake/biscuit/crisps and a swig of whatever beverage I have beside me at the time. :D

Juzminator, it may be time for a reinstall. Results I got for my SATA drive was around the 50mb/s mark. If you have a virus checker on like Norton, sometimes this can reduce loading times due to the fact it has to scan every file as it loads.
turn off your virus checker and run the SiS test again to check.
Also, how old is the drive?

Virus software wasn't running when test was carried out :(

    It's a Maxtor 6 Y120 120GB HDD - not very old. I've got a Gigabyte 8S648FX-RZ mobo and a EIO Serial ATA controller card.

As for re-install - no way, I doubt I could do it without messing everything up royally. What I need is for someone to talk me through the things to check to see if summink needs activating that ain't activated.

I had similar problems with loading times befroe. Run something like Ad-Aware or SpyBot, as I feel you may have some spyware app running in the background that's constantly scanning your HD and slowing things down.

If yours are 10 minutes i think your hard drive is knackered :)

Hey there, I was exagirating abit. :p
I was just pizzed off at the time. I just wanted to state how unbeleivable the loading is.
On my PC its about 5 to 10 secs for the bits in the game and 1 min or so for the main game to load at start.

I was thinking about trying one of those barracuda 10.000rpm SATA drives.
They may not be as reliable as a more standard drive, but if it helps with loading times then it might be worth a look.
