 If anyone's interested i purchased an Hitachi DV-DS 161E hdd/dvd recorder from crampton & moore online electrical store and it's top dollar!Ordered it on Friday afternoon and it arrived Saturday morning!Great service! The system itself is a lovely looking piece of kit and it only only took me 20 minutes to set up and it compliments my Hitachi 7200 plasma tv nicely! It has a 160gb hard drive and it plays dvd-ram,dvd-rw,dvd+rw,dvd-r,dvd+r,dvd,vcd,acd,divx,wma and jpeg!It also has slots for all available memory cards! And not forgetting the dv in for your camcorder!I've recorded sport, sky tv,natural history etc and played region 1+2 dvds(The Lord of War looked fantastic) and the results have been faultless. If your on the hunt for quality hdd/dvd recorder then give this a go.You won't be disappointed.

That's what I was gonna point out as well...and for that sort of money it's criminal it doesn't have it but at the end of the day if he's happy with it that's all that matters.

thanks for sharing this m8, can this record/play dual layer?
Secondly the memory slots are two way? i.e u can paly the stuff from the stick as well as copy the stuff from the memort stick to HD?
I know it sound silly but must ask as this is not always true, can you record a play at the same time from HD?
And fianlly which built in tuner this baby comes with?

I considered this dvd recorder a while ago until I found out all the bad points to it.

    1. No RGB in.

    2. It has an analogue tuner built in and the "advert skipping" uses this analogue source which means that when analogue tv is switched off, it will become unusable. It only works on the aerial input and not scart so you couldn't use it via scart if you plug in a $ky box.

    3. The analogue tuner will be of no use so you will have to buy a 3view/cable/$ky box to record from meaning you would need 2 3free boxes to record and watch the other side.

    4. No HDMI in the UK, yet in Europe it comes with HDMI.

    5. The 250GB version can not be bought in the UK, only Europe.

    E is the Europe version
EUK is the UK version (no hdmi for us brits.)

    6. no digital tuner.

    7. no sat/cable box control.

    8. no guide+ (the new dv-ds162/ds252/ds512 have this)

    9. can not record and play at the same time, the machine has to be recording first which defeats the object since it has to be in stand-bye to start recording.

    10. did hear the startup time was slow.

    11. remote is a bit clumsy since it has a part that slides down.

    12. the machine/remote and manual are near identical to the LG machines which have been slated.

You gotta look into things before you buy them and I did.

There are too many negative points for this machine.

One more thing....it is also overpriced for what it is.

For less money you can buy a machine with 250GB and loads more features.

I'm interested in the new panasonic and pionneers but don't have much details about them yet.

RGB in is important, 3view, sat control and guide+, precise cuts on editing.

Ethernet sounds good as long as it has full features like setting up a timer while your on a different computer. ie. you hear of a film coming on that you want to record, just pop in your nearest library and send it an email.

    Card reader and/or usb.
    hdmi out with scaling.

    Read/record all formats.

It appears the panasonic and pioneer may have all these features which is what I've been after for a long time now.

The new UK versions I'm interested in.

Looks like it could be panasonic (EX75/85) or pioneer.

Toshiba looks good but only records to -r/-rw and I think ram.

New Hitachi dv-ds162/252/512 may be good, I've been to the jap sites and they now have guide+ be no mention about uk specs.

One good think about the Hitachi machines is they are nice looking but the current machines have too many bad points to even consider one.

I don't know how effective the advert skipping is but when analogue tv is switched off it will be made useless.

What other machines are comming out; Philips, jvc, samsung, LG ?

Blueray ? probably next year when they've fully on the marke.

I have not seen the spec for the new pioneers, do you have the link/info? assume it would be better/equal to pana ex 75/85.
