Hitachi cracked screen and warranty

Standard Member
I want to ask about consumer rights in relation to a 42" Hitachi plasma tv a colleague of mine has.

Last night there was a loud electrical buzzing noise from her tv and now the main panel has a horseshoe shaped crack right across the inside along the length of the panel. The tv is no longer functioning.

The tv was bought from curry's in June 2006. There were no signs the tv was faulty in any way until it completely failed.

What are the chances of getting a free repair / replacement on a panel this old? The warranty was only for 1 year but surely a plasma tv should last longer than this? I would think a product this expensive should last longer than 2 years?
