My Brother in Law has just had on of these , it is hooked up to a Crystalio via DVI and being fed with a Pioneer 868 SDI and Sky+ SDI and I can honestly say that the pictures are truely gob-smacking , even with minimal tweaking . I know Hitachi are the Marmite of the plasma world but I know which side of the debate I favour now . It also seems to have all the right boxes ticked as well - HDCP compatible DVI and supporting 720p @50hz .
If anyone knows different please let me know - Also any possible pitfalls .

    Thanks .

Do you know if it supports it native resolution @ 50Hz via DVI ? as with 720p the panel is still doing the last bit of scaling...would be nice to eliminate that.

    Cheers, Lee

Not sure about that m8 , I am not that technically minded - Would that be in the Panel's spec. or the Crystalio - I can then try and fid out .

According to the instruction manual for the Hitachi 55PMA550E, 1366 x 768 isn't a recommended input via DVI.

At the moment mine is boxed up and ready to be replaced in the next few days. I haven't had a great deal of time to play about with the thing as it has spent most of the time in the hallway in the box!

I have tried it with my four year old Sony 735 and a new Pioneer 868, both using component. I was quite impressed with the Hitachi although a little disappointed that the Pioneer wasn't much better than the Sony. I received a HDMI - DVI cable yesterday and hopefully the Pioneer will be better than the Sony on the replacement screen over DVI. I wasn't aware though that the Hitachi would accept a 720p @ 50 Hz over DVI - I hope it does.

I had been looking for a plasma for around twelve months and from what I have seen on it, I was very pleased. Even Sky was far better than I expected.

A dead pixel towards the centre of the screen and also a red tint on the left hand side.

    Maybe fourth time lucky!!

Appologies to all . It seems that it does not support 720p @ 50 Hz . according to the specs. it's only at 60 hz . Why are so many denied 720p@50Hz ? I shall be ringing Hitachi on Monday to find out

I started off thinking that I knew nothing about resolutions and scalers - It now turns out that I know even less than that . :clown:

When I said: "I thought I didn't know much about resolutions and scalers", that was before I spoke to the Hitachi technical support; asking about scaling and the native resolution over DVI. He said native resolution over DVI was possible.......not according to the user manual!

He asked me where he could find some info on scalers. Maybe he was new to the department!!

Hi, I also have the 55MA550E and I am very happy with the picture. You can only use the 720p if using the Region One DVD's so that it plays in 60 htz.
I am connected via DVI-D to the Denon 1910 and I am very happy with the picture. Region 2's I use the 1080i which also looks really good.
I am still waiting for my RGB to Component converter from JS Components to hopefully make the Sky+ picture even better.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do when High def is released on Skybut I'm hoping there will be a solution in over a year.

Did you notice much of an improvement going from component to DVI-D?
