Playing a PS2 via scart on an LCD TV is gona get those kind of results. Ever heard of an LCDs native resolution? Well it gives the best picture when it runs at that resolution so by running a PS2 (very low resolution) it has to scale it down and the end result is it looks pretty crap. You should try and feed your LCD some high quality feeds to get the best results, my personal advice would be to leave the PS2 behind and embrace the PS3 as it supports HiDef.

Surely it's scaling it up from the PS2's native resolution of 640x480 (4:3) to the LCD's 1366x768 (16:9)?

Burnout Revenge presumably supports 16:9 widescreen so the TV isn't having to stretch the image to fit the width of the screen whereas with PES4 it is as the game does NOT support widescreen. As a result the image quality is made worse by the fact that the 4:3 game is stretched across the screen to 16:9. You should play PES4 in 4:3 mode (if you don't already that is).

I own all 3 current gen consoles and the 7200 and i must say that the only console that rises up to the challenge of having great looking games on this tv is the xbox.In fact most AAA xbox games look 100% better on this tv than on a good CRT.Xbox games that are a bit blurry on a CRT due to antialliasing are transformed to visual masterpieces on the 7200(games like PGR2 and forza). Most xbox games have a 16:9 option and that helps.Games like Ninja Gaiden,DOA3(and ultimate),Panzer dragon orta,Doom3(my God this looks way closer to the pc version on this TV) look unbelievable...almost next gen.

The GC is dissapointing,RE4 looks like a complete jaggie mess(but at least you can play it full screan with the zoom feature since the game doesn't support true 16:9) and just about every GC game i've tried looks similar to running on a CRT.

The ps2 games look like **** and really show the weaknesses of the console.Horrible jaggies(way more than on a CRT) and washed out textures.Only GT4 looks good.

It's more of a console(and specific game's) problem than a TV one.

Yes you are correct i think, either way the fact it is scaling makes the picture degrade. Whether it takes the PS2 resolution and scales it up or scales down from its native resolution it doesn't matter.

ALL games will be scaled though. I think it probably is the 4:3 stretching, or possibly the panel struggling with the colour ala real football on TV.

Slightly off topic but, does anyone know what format that 'digital' output on the GameCube actually is?

I'm not sure what you mean by format but it outputs 480p. I have a US GC and most of my games are US too. I have connected the GC using the official component cable which uses the digital output connection and the games seem to look worse then they did using scart or s-video. RE4 in particular looks awful.
