Just a heads up on this LCD TV. Price drop to around £1100 inclusive of VAT and delivery at a couple of online retailers. A real bargain when you consider manufacturer, quality, size, connections and reviews.
If this is a sign of the major price drops expected in the final quarter of this year, we are in for a treat, bring it on!

Firstly, IMHO "What HI FI" reviews are not trustworthy and hardly objective. It is more like LCD TV reviews for dummies. In fact in some of their past reviews there are glaring errors on spec etc. Anyway that is just my personal opinion. This set was up against the new Panasonic and Toshiba 26" sets in the review comparison, however they are a later generation so the comparison is biased. The Panasonic has a built in freeview tuner - but no PC in - I am not sure how any LCD set can get 5 stars these days and not have PC in. In the same comparison there is the 27" Thomson, which received ***** for picture quality in homecinemachoice reviews, here it is blasted for a very poor picture - so go figure...
The downside in the Hitachi review was that the sound was below par - having looked at the sound spec - I think these guys simply reviewed this TV with default settings, so no tweaking of picture or sound is my guess, there is an output for a sub though, which I am sure will solve any bass problem. Contrast was also pointed out as being weak, however other reviews have praised the contrast as they have dynamic backlight control.

I found a couple of online reviews for this set. If you search google for 28LD5200 on page 4 there is the link below which can be translated. German -so not perfect, but a start.

    www.areadvd.de/hardware/Hitachi_28LD5200.shtml

There are a couple more, will try and post them later today.

This is a PDF for a slightly different model, but I think most features are present in the 5200 as well.

    http://www.hitachi-hk.com.hk/FileManager/EN/ProductManager/LCD_cat.pdf

It is really tempting, cause in this price range it blows the competition away.

yeah completely agree - consistency (lack of) between reviewers is well dodgy , esp What Video & Hifi.
Their review of Thomson LCD quite harshly scored I thought, especially as most people wouldn't be using analogue aerial signal ....?

Anyhow, have ordered a 28LD5200 today (Hiwayhifi.co.uk) who met Digital Direct's price (£1020 inc del). Bargain!!!! Curry's had it at £2200 ..... gulp.

To anyone who's ordered these, could they please keep us posted on things such as black level, response time etc.?

I've called around stores near me and none of them have it in stock to look at, so I'll trust other people's opinions.

Ade I am your new best friend so keep me posted :D

do you have experience in LCD picture quality?

If I got one I would have to have a wall bracket with it too, anyone know the cheapest place?

also why is the price of the Hitachi dropping so fast?

Is there another superior model about to be released?

Ordered Wed pm, arrived Thurs am !!!!

Well, to be honest I'm not experienced enough in LCD to give a definitive review of this tv; my previous was an 8 year old 28: Tosh (wasn't even widescreen).
    My first opinions are:
Looks great - better than in the pics and a darker silver in colour, which suits my living room (black amp, speakers etc).
Speakers are detachable, so thought of removing them but the sound is ok (better than my old Tosh tv) but the tv's defaults are appalling so much fiddling produced much better sound. This didn't affect my decision on buying it as I'll aways use surround sound system when playing dvds. As was the analogue tv signal, which I have'nt even tried.
RGB video through scart is excellent - my Tosh 340 dvd player produced exceptional detail - I'll be trying it via component video shortly, so may (should?) be even better. I thought the RGB scart from my Pioneer freeview box didn't give quite as good a picture until I realised
    a) my freeview wasn't outputting rgb, and
    b) I was watching olympics on bbc interactive and must be a compressed signal.
Freeview sorted, and image looks great ; bearing in mind I was previously viewing digital tv through s-video. Still the occasional digitising of the image but still acceptable, imo. Also, the pic has a 'dirty' effect when viewing something white, but sitting 9-10 ft away this isn't really noticable - but would be about 6 ft away.
I played my first dvd last night - The Beach - which does have many dark/night shots and I thought the contrast was very good. The blacks were very black, although the defaults were ridiculously high - again, much adjustment required. The dynamic backlight option produced far too high contrasts for me and I've turned it off.
Haven't noticed ANY blurring or trailing in fast action. Don't actually know what speed this set is, but doesn't seem to be any problem, imho.

Being my first LCD, not sure what to expect. Certainly better than older CRT, but certainly not the best compared to new CRTs. This Hitachi seems better than all I've seen in stores (JVC, Tosh, Thomson) but of course they all had poor analogue feeds .....
The only thing I would say about this set (possibly all LCDs), is that it brings out the worst in a poor quality signal, and the best from a good one !!
Overall, very pleased with looks and function. Might try the DVI input from PC one day, but probably not until I think about another DVD player (with DVI).

Nope, no glitches - but an annoying hum (according to wifey)
I don't really notice it except when the sound is muted. Maybe more of a buzz, coming from top-right of the tv.
I've turned back-light off completely and makes no difference; I'm not sure if it was their from day one, it's just there's a fish-tank in the next room and the door is usually open .....
I don't notice it when the sound is on at normal levels, and definitely not when my surround system is on !!

Not that fussed about linking my PC to it (sorry, no Xbox) but I'll need a dvi cable - no cables were supplied with the tv.

What's Bad : Styling, patchy broadcast credentials
What's Good : Picture with quality sources, connectivity.

Broadcast signals range from rather good to downright awful, with standard daytime tv looking suitably brash but the more subdued tones of channel 4's cricket looking altogether washed out. The latter also suffers from conspicuous ghosting, but as it was live analogue feed, it's unlikely to be a fault with the set itself. Switch over to DVD and the experience is far more rewarding.......

is that septembers What video and Widescreen TV?

so what the review is saying, if you connect up an xbox with component, a DVD or HDTV via DVI the picture should be lustful?

NTL has always been crap, the skyfootball looks a joke even on a new CRT TBH

    October

Yep they do not like the analogue source

Movement is also largely smooth, with the blocking and juddering that has plauged LCD for so long kept to tasteful minimum. There is however a degree of tizzing when the camera pans across straight lines, such as picket fences......

Up the source quality to high-definition (delivered using the component connections) and the image becomes better still. Detail is razor sharp and everything within the frame is incredibly well defined. Three dimensions are rendered with awesome precision and the whole is enriched by crisp colours and strong blacks. The overall effect is supremely natural.....
