Ultra HD TV price war set to get even more serious

Chinese TV mega-manufacturer, Hisense, has announced that it's to launch the Opera TV Store in selected models of their Smart TV range.

On the face of it, this doesn't seem like terribly relevant news, for us, but it's an indication that they're gearing up for a full scale assault on Western markets.

We received notice from the CEA, this week, that tells us Hisense is going to be out in force come CES 2014, in Vegas, and for the first time, the manufacturer will be holding its own press event on the opening day.

At last year's CES, Hisense took over the stand vacated by Microsoft - which is huge - but this is further indication that the Chinese are seriously on the way.

Hisense, which is already using the Opera Devices Software Development Kit to power their entertainment portal, is introducing the Opera TV Store app platform to offer audiences a a selection of HTML5-based apps optimised for connected TV. This spans apps for video, music, social media, games, news and utilities.

“Opera and Hisense have built a rewarding partnership. We evaluated many options when we decided to offer apps to our TV customers, and chose Opera as it has proven to be the simplest and fastest way to bring apps to TV,” said Charlie Wang, Vice President of Hisense Group. “We are excited to extend our collaboration to include the Opera TV Store and take our Smart TV experience to a new level.”

The Opera TV Store is already available on Smart TVs and Blu-ray Disc players from Sony and TCL, and is coming soon to TVs, Blu-ray Disc players and set-top boxes from several other manufacturers including Sony, Samsung and Philips.

What's more, Hisense had a 110-inch Ultra HD TV on show at IFA 2013, in Berlin, and with 84 and 65-inch models scheduled for CES, they'll be redoubling their efforts on the domestic market.

If we think we've seen a 4K price war, already, we sense that Hisense, and the rest, will be taking that to a whole new level come January and it's something we discussed in our latest podcast.

There was some jaw-dropping accounts a while back of Ultra-D tie-in with 4k Hisense tvs both on quality and price but have heard nothing since.

In addition to Hisense there was another Chinese company TCL which they said that are planning to bring their TVs to the European Market by next year. Their TV were not bad at all.
