I recently needed to resolve the problem of not being able to hear music while playing drums. I play along to the music so I need to have the right balance of the music and the drums.
A drummer in the US recommended Sony MDR-7506 headphones which I bought from http://www.totalaudio.co.uk/Phones/phones.htm.
I'm very happy with them. My MP3 walkman playing at full volume is clear and undistorted and the quality insulation allows some volume of drums through but not enough to overwhelm the in-ear music.
Recommended.

If you're really going at the drums or like in-ear type phones, some of Etymotic Research's products are very good indeed.
Both the ER-4 and ER-6 phones provide audiophile quality, and they make some very well regarded noise reduction plugs as well for musicians.
I use a set of ER-6 phones for mobile use to shut out external noise.
