I am intrested in converting my VHS collection over to DVD. However I am overwhelmed by all the hardware and software I might need. I was hoping someone could break it down for me cost wise and effectiveness.

    I am on a P4 2.4 256ddr. What would you suggest?

Thanks in advanced, please don't hold back any information :p I need it.

I would recommend going down the 'standalone route', i.e. buying a set-top DVD recorder (with or without a HDD) and use that as the capture device. You could then purchase a PC DVD burner, import your DVD recordings onto the PC and 'author' with your own menus (etc). For advice on that issue have a look at the 'Which DVD Recorder?' link in my signature.

If you want to go down the PC capture route you'd be better off looking in the Entertainment PCs & Computer hardware forum.

I used a Panasonic E85 so that I could copy the VHS tapes to it's hard disk first and then edit before dubbing to DVD. I would suspect that this is a lot easier than doing it through a PC.
