Hi All. I'm planning on buying a Rega Planar 3 at the end of the year. Lets say I had another 500 euros in my pocket to buy a hi-fi system to work with it, what should I buy?

    Thanks!

Define "Hi-Fi System"? What equipment does that included? CD Player, Amp, Speakers, Turntable, Other?

The REGA Planar 3 typically cost between UK£550 and UK£650 (€615 to €727). That's a lot to spend on a Turntable only to connect it to a undefined €500 system. (£446)

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/turntables/hi-fi-turntables/hifi-turntables/l/rega

    Consider the Rega Planar 1 w/ Performance Pack - £333 -

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/turntables/...planar-1-turntable-including-performance-pack

That leaves you an additional £200 to £300 for the rest of your system; £650 to £750 total (€727 to €839 total).

The first thing we need is a list of the equipment included in your "Hi-Fi system"?

Hi Blue Wizard. Thanks for the feedback. My needs a pretty simple in this matter. I need a small system for the planar 3 (or whatever turntable I choose). I would like to have an extra input or two for the future if I want to add a streaming music device or other external source. Only stereo output is needed.

    Thanks!

Since you haven't bought the turntable yet, can you give us your overall budget?

And you didn't say, even though I asked, what specifically do you need? Unless you say otherwise, we are going to assume you need an Amp, Speakers, and a Turntable. Are they any other features you also need - AM/FM, DAB/DAB+, Network Streaming, Tone Controls, DAC, other.

Is there any other equipment this system needs to have - for example - CD Player.

Also, you claim you need a - Small System - can you elaborate on that? What do you mean by a small system?

Best guess your total budget is - €1000 to perhaps €1200. Confirm or Deny?

I think perhaps a turntable in the roughly £300 to £400 (€340 to £450) range would make more sense and leave you more money for Amp and Speakers.

Two good Turntables in that price range are -

    - Rega Planar 1 with Performance Pack

    - Project Debut Carbon CD with Ortofon 2M Cartridge

Also, can you tell us what Country you are in?
Perhaps we can look up links to equipment in that country. Or perhaps in nearby countries.

My apologies if I was not clear.

We are moving to Switzerland from the US. None of my electronics can come with for obvious reasons. The better half is letting me purchase a turntable. A Planar 1 was the plan, but she is letting me buy a little nicer, hence the planar 3. Since all of my electronics are being replaced, I need a stereo to plug the Planar into. Regarding the features you listed...

    AM/FM, DAB/DAB+, - Nope
Network Streaming, - Not built in, but an Aux port for one would be nice
    Tone Controls, - Not necessary
    DAC, - Nope
    CD Player - Nope
other. Just a couple of auxillary ports if I want to add a device later.

Speakers... I have a pair of vintage KLH 602 speakers. They are pretty good speakers, but will be the weak spot in the system until I can afford new ones.

Small system. I was trying to say bookshelf system, amp or otherwise, physically small. I don't need a large AV receiver for this purpose.

    Budget? Excluding VAT, 1200ish.

    I hope this clarifies things...

So, you don't need speakers? Right now you only need Turntable and Amp, and your overall budget is roughly €1200 (£1066)?

If you only need an Amp and Turntable, then you can probably do pretty well for the suggested budget.

There is REGA Planar 2 turntable you could consider -

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/turntables/...planar-2-turntable-including-performance-pack

Which is considerably less than the Rega Planar 3 -

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/turntables/.../rega-planar-3-turntable-inc-elys-2-cartridge

If you want a very high quality small and minimalist amp, then consider the REGA Brio, this is about half the size of a standard amp, though only about 50w/ch -

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/hi-fi/hi-fi-separates/hi-fi-amps-receivers/rega-brio-amplifier

Though pushing your budget, I would at least consider then 60w/ch Rotel R12 -

    https://www.hifix.co.uk/hi-fi/hi-fi-separates/hi-fi-amps-receivers/rotel-a12-amplifier

This does have Bluetooth capability and a 24b/192k DAC. Better to have an not need than to need and not have.

Most likely for you, purchases from Germany would be the easiest.

If you want maximum value in an amp, then consider the Yamaha AS501 (85w/ch, Phono, DAC,...) - €340 -

    https://www.sg-akustik.de/shop/Vollverstaerker/Yamaha/Yamaha-A-S501

If you are interested in more Power, then consider the Yamaha AS701 (100w/ch, Phono, DAC,...) - €545 to €560 -

I found the ROTEL R12 (€599) on sale in Germany -

Musical Fidelity M3i (70w/c) can run pretty expensive, but definitely a quality amp -

This is sort of a Price Tracking Website in Germany, for you, the real value is that it list several German Retailers of Audio Equipment. That help you find what is avalable in the EU for audio equipment.

Yamaha A-S501 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Rotel A12 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Rega Planar 2 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

    That should be helpful.

Common EU Brands are Rega, Arcam, Rotel, Musical Fidelity, NAIM, Cambridge Audio,...

You might want to check out Marantz Products, the Marantz PM6006 (50w/ch, DAC), or the Marantz PM7005 (60w/ch, USB DAC) might work well for you, and the you can occasionally find the Marantz PM8005 (70w/ch, no dac) on sale -

Marantz PM6006 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

    Marantz PM6006 silber/gold | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

    Marantz PM7005 silber/gold | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Marantz PM7005 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

    Marantz PM8005 silber/gold | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Marantz PM8005 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

If nothing else, you now have several links to Audio Sellers in Germany.

Thanks alot. I appreciate the advice!! I'll have to do some price comparison Germany vs. Swiss stores.

IMHO, I would prefer if the bluetooth and streaming devices are separate from the main amp. The technology evolves so quickly that in a year or two, that stereo would be obsolete!

Are you currently in the US or in Switzerland?

Most of what I found, I found simply by searching Google-De (Germany). I suspect you could do the same at Google-Switzerland.

Also, once you are in the EU, you can pretty much order from anywhere.

As to Separate Streaming and Bluetooth, it is much cheaper to buy it built in.

You can check out the Yamaha RN602 Network Receiver (80w/ch) and the Yamaha RN803 Network Receiver (100w/ch) -

Yamaha R-N602 schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Yamaha R-N602 silber | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Yamaha R-N803D schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

Yamaha R-N803D schwarz | heise online Preisvergleich / Deutschland

To duplicate the features these amp have, plan on spending about €600 to €700 more. Though to be fair, it can be done for less than that. A basic Bluetooth Receiver can run between €40 to €60. And you can get the Google Chromecast Streamer for about €40.

But a good Streaming Device cost around €500.
