    I've recently bought myself a 42PD5200 that's compatible with 720p signals and 1080i.

Clearly DVD signals are limted to 460p- If I buy a scaler can I up-scale the image to 720p or 1080i? I heard that there are copy protection issues??

Realy don't have much of a clue on this, any help/advice appreciated.

Im no expert but the answer to your question is yes.
If you got an external scaler like the iscan HD for example you can achieve this.

Minor snag is the Iscan HD is £1000. Also, I note the outputs of it are:
One Digital Video Output - DVI-I connector

One Analog Video Output - VGA HD-15 connector

Now, I believe that the DVI input on the Hitach is DVI -D?
Or would you send it thru the 15 pin PC sub socket?

It (the Hitachi input) is DVD-D which is digital only, although I think DVD-I is integrated (analog or digital) so it might work, but I'm straying on uncertain ground here now.....

Things are starting to get complicated!

What about the Pioneer DV868 with built in scaler- that may be what I'm looking for.

What about the copy protection issues?

DVI-I carries both analog and digital signal (or rather can carry them both) normally any DVI-I interface can connect to any DVI-D with the correct cable. google for 'DVI-I versus DVI-D'

Some DVD players have already DVD-I or DVD-D integrated, but there are also players such as the philips Sa963 that can (with a firmware fix available somewhere on the net) send 1080i through the component.

    cheers,

The iScan HD can output a 1024 x 1024 exact resolution specifically for ALIS panels like your Hitachi. Sending the exact res of the plasma is usually a slightly better option since it leaves absolute minimal scaling to be done by the plasma. The question is will the VGA input or the DVI input (DVI being somewhat preferable) accept a 1024 x 1024 signal. IIRC the Hitachi DVI input is a pain in backside with anything, any owners using it care to comment??

You may also want to navigate yourself over to the Video Processing forum (right near the bottom of the main forum list page) where you'll find plenty of info regarding progressive scan, scaling, the iscan, the Lumagen (another hugely popular scaler)...

    Surely a DVI input on a 1024 x 1024 screen will accept a 1024 x 1024 signal.. surely!?

It might accept a 1024x1024 from an iscan HD, it won't from a pc cos it gets itself detected by pnp as an xga display. Iscan ignores PnP and lets you force the resolution you want, though this might result in several resets to default before you get it right. Once you are out of range, you get no picture, and can't see the menu! The iscan does have the facility to send native alis res, it is simply whether the hitachi can recieve it. I have tried with a PC, no success. I wouldn't say it can't be done, just not by me.
