I've been thinking of doing this for a while now but haven't had the courage untill now. My floorstanders (Paradigm Esprit) are huge bipolar efforts with the all the drivers situated at the top half of the speaker frame. As the HGS-18 is a huge box and I have a small room it's a pain to situate. This was the reason for my speaker mod, I realise that my warranty goes out of the window but I just can't see the Velodyne drivers dying on me just yet.

    The Procedure

1, I created a small incision along one edge of the HGS box and used a crow bar to open it up, the other sides opened easily enough once the first side was done.

2, I carefully remove the driver unit and the servo mechanism, this is a surprisingly simple task to do with a screwdriver.

3, Now came the hard work, as the driver unit is far wider than the speaker I knew I had to create enough room for it in the speaker so I fitted a 2" router to a power drill and made a big enough hole at the bottom of the speaker to fit the driver and it's mechanism.

3, Wiring the driver unit up was very simple as it was allready wired, I simply used expanding foam to secure the servo mechanism to the speaker and plugged the power cord in.

    Results

Too early to talk about results but I can say this, I've noticed no real difference in performance, if the new design is even close to being as good as the HGS in it's normal box I'll be over the moon. As always with my work I'll do a full review with pictures, it should be done for this evening hopefully.

The extra space in my room now is fantastic, I highly recommend this procedure to anyone who needs extra room.

    Regards
    Phil

    Phil.

Very interesting indeed, and taking your lead so to speak, i have removed all the drivers from my 203's, 202, 2 pairs of TDM's and 4 Servo 15's and installed them in the front panel of my RPTV much like that "new fangled t.v with all them little speakers in it".
I have to say that first impressions are very good indeed and i would say it compares very favourably with Bush's pseudo surround techniques on their t.v's.
It was not easy connecting it all up but i found the hardboard panel on the back of my Tosh was easy to "persuade" to come out, but connecting all those speaker cables to t.v's amp board was no mean feat i can tell you.
All that remains is for me to glue my Tag and Tosh dvd together and cable tie them to the top (any suggestions as to how i might get the Sky dish on the side panel?) and i will have the very first fully integrated mobile RPTV unit.

The worrying things is that Apocalypse is the kind of guy who would do this sort of thing, if he thought it would improve the sound...:smoke:
Or does no-one else remember the B&W sub sandwidched between two concrete slabs?

I have considered this but it is a bit more complicated than that, given the relative heights involved both my wife and her mother (ho ho) and incured head injuries (concussion for the mother-out-law) from the lmb when entering the room. I am there thinking along the lines of an independant (possibly hovercraft) platform that could be connected via pulley to the door/ceiling so that when anyone enters the dish goes up and then comes down.
    Your thoughts???

    regards

    Steve.
I also have a "big track" that i was thinking i could attach and program it to drag the dish around the coffe table and back again if required.

In that case, your "big track" idea leads me onto an aerial mono rail system, keeps your main area free of clutter and can also be used to move the dish to various other positions to tune in on all those other satellites with programmes aimed at the more "adult" viewer. A name for this system could be the "porno-rail".

A porno-rail - the only downsides i can see to this very evolved plan is that everyone will have to wear wellington boots to aviod the high currents necessary to power such a device (at least 6 x D cells by my reckoning)

Having given thought to this i have decided to abort the porno-rail (tm) as i am not sure that TAMREQ has the power to deal with anomilies such as the ariel circuit.
My attentions are now drawn to actually shelving the sky dish project in favour of a Stanna stairlift type device for entire house interactivity, i am currently in negotiation with Stanna to supply me with a multiple chair (a la Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) configuration.
