I recomends the Japanese region 2 DVD. Its been out for a while so I doubt you can get the special edition which i got. You might get lucky though.
Im sure any version is good, but might not have a DTS track. The Jap region 2 one does.

I have got the R3 Ultimate edition in the red fold out case and nice book. Most of the extras are in Korean / Chinese which is a shame but the DTS sound and PQ are just first rate on this version. I would recommend this version although I have not seen the Japanese R2 to compare it with.

Screencaps of the Japanese release and the Korean U.E. here.
The Japanese looks better, both have full bitrate DTS, the Japanese 5.1, the Korean ES. The Korean is identical to the R3HK EDKO-release for sound and picture.
If it's important, I find the Korean U.E to have the classiest, coolest packing, even better than the Japanese L.E. box set.

    Probably cheapest from
AmazonJP , approx GBP19,90 including shipping (£15,40 for the disc itself, so well under customs limit). Least expensive shipping option usually takes a bit less than two weeks.
Or at YesAsia at approx £21,55, which should give free shipping.

Sorry - this doesn't answer your question but I just saw this film at the cinema (last night). FANTASTIC! Great visuals and the surround sound was awsome - the dripping water in the fight scene with Sky almost had me ducking to escape the rain drops! Cool wire-work too!

That's the extended version (by about 8 minutes), picture quality is not as good as the R3HK, R3Korean, or the R2J, and as stated on the site, the distrubutors logo pops up on the image every now nad then (every 5 monutes or so I think) if you watch with English subtitles.

So is the version being shown in cinemas the same as the Edko DVD release? - ie has it got the blue tinge to it which the Jap R2 does not?

Can I ask a stupid question? Is this a very melacholy film, like CTHD. I keep reading about how beautiful it is, but that tells me nothing about the story.

I bought CTHD because it was so visually stunning, but rarely watch it as the film itself is a bit sad for my tastes. :(

    Hi
Just a word of warning about the R3 Edko disc. If you are watching this on a projector you might have a problem with the frame rate. On the projector I had tearing and lots of lines and and picture stuttering in the picture but it was fine on the TV. I got the Jap version from cdjapan (which was not cheap) and it plays fine on the projector. I remember reading about this on www.dvddebate.com about the frame rate.

Must say that I agree with Trojan about the R3HK EDKO-release of Hero.
There is a little ghosting and the PQ is a little soft. In saying that its the release that I have and its not bad enough to put me off watching it.
What about that 6.1 DTS Full Bitrate sound. Pure Magic.

I had this same problem on my 43MXE1. I have a R3 version of Hero. Sound was fantastic, but the picture was pretty poor. No problem with other R1 or R2 disc, and Garden State (watched same day) looked fantastic. Any ideas what is going on with my copy of Hero . Should I try another version as I loved the film
