After some testing during the first half of this year, Sat1 and ProSieben will start broadcasting in HDTV from 26/10/2005 !!!
From the text it is unclear if it will be only upconverts from SD to 1080i or there will be original HD programming (only not there native programming)

AIUI Sat1 and Pro7 will be simulcasting their SD network in HD - with SD shows upconverted, but US imports and movies available in HD broadcast in HD on the HD variant?

Hopefully they will be FTA on DSat as their analogue and SD digital variants are !

(Be too much to hope for English language audio on a second audio channel - or is this common on movies, so English speakers can listen to the original audio?)

    Found this too:
    More on Sat1HD and Pro7HD

It says they will use H.264 (MPEG4) and 1080i - no mention of DVB-S2. So no use buying one of those expensive Quali-TV MPEG 2 HDTV receivers at £400 quid then!

"Die Programmteile, die nicht nativ in HDTV produziert und erhältlich sind, werden aufwärts konvertiert, so dass sie qualitativ dem DVD-Standard entsprechen."

Speaks for itself and is great news !

PRO7 uses the second audio channel to transmit the DOLBY SURROUND (German). First Audio channel transmits in Stereo (German).

Shows what a rich country Germany is. Are'nt the terrestrial channels of which there are many I guess (or cable only ?) totally independant or are they owned by ARD / ZDF ?

It's a shame say for example our enterprising newish channel 5 can't just go it alone with HD on Astra also. It amazes me just how many HD ready TV's there are now and we have'nt even got any HD channels for months yet!

I hope the BBC kick off an HD service as I have more interest in what they will be doing than the Sky offerning

    Hiya RecordableDVDfan,

Besides the public funded channels (ARD and ZDF and 3rd channel regional variants such as NDR3, SWF3 etc) most others seem to be private. Sat1 and Pro7 are together (with 2 others Kabel1 and N24) in one company - others owned by RTL (which owns most of UK Channel 5).

No sign of RTL channels moving to hi-def in Germany yet - though I wouldn't expect them to be too long and give the Sat1/Pro7 group a head start....

The RTL group is very backwards in these things, they only have stereo sound and are zooming everything thats 16:9 to 4:3, i dont expect any HD channels from them in the next few years.

They are also DVB-S2 capable - which is a newer version of the standard DVB standard (too many uses of the word standard there!). The Humax is expected end of this month and Philips in October....

Unsure - the "old" MPEG2 HDTV Quali-tv machines do - I would expect prices of these to plummet soon - as they will be swept away with H264/DVB-2. The Euro1080 channels have pledged to stay with MPEG2 on some channels for a few years - but no new ones would.

I have a quali so yes I know they do decode 4.2.2 but as I say wonder if the new ones will also, even then these won't work with Sky's HD offerings apparently ?
