New Xbox bought for my son for xmas. Opened this morning. Set up and commenced play around 9am. After a couple of very enjoyable hours playing both the Incredibles and Urbz Sims (2-3 hrs over a period f several hours with many breaks), it has all started to go wrong.

    Symptoms:
Loaded Urbz Sims 2 player and picture froze. Msg stated disc had a problem or may be dirty. Removed disc, checked, looked pefect, reloaded, same again. Ejected again, reloaded, this time accessed the game but then kep freezing. Now Xbox light flashed RED and Customer Support screen came up. Ejected disc, powered off Xbox, powered on and reloaded...same again. Note: Had played 1 player mode fine earlier in the day.
Loaded Incredibles which has worked perfectly all day and now Xbox is flashing RED with cusomer screen again. Have read manual and it states flashing 'Orange' indicates console is too hot and to power off and leave in a well ventilated area.

Note: I have only played on this machine for a couple of hours intermitently. I can not believe that it would overheat after such short play duration - is this normal?

To make things worse I can not find my receipt  Though as I bought it from TRU just before xmas, I'm sure #proof of purchase' may extend to showing my Visa Card statement (statutory rights?).

I have read through the manual and Microsoft state that any problems must be reported to their customer service centre UK. Surely a faulty machine so new could simply be returned to the place of purchase.... or is there something I should know of with Xbox?

Please can anyone let me know if this is unusual or common to games consoles? What should I do?

    Many Thanks

does sound like a faulty machine (although Urbz is an EA game and we all know how bad they mess up there xbox games :D )
As for it getting hot - is it?? does it feel hot to touch?? you are playing it on a flat surface etc ?? is the fan running ok?
Should be able to get a replacement from TRU no problem - if not xbox customer service will help you.

Unfortunately, it does sound like the machine is faulty. Don't worry, your credit card statement will be ample proof of purchase.

If i remember correctly, the only reason to deal with Microsoft directly is if you want to keep the contents of your hard drive intact (save games, music files etc)

Obviously, having just bought the machine, this should not prove an issue for you. The retailer should simply swap it over for a new one. :smashin:

No receipt will not pose a problem, taken from the trading standards website

Thanks guys I was panicking and the option to return has calmed my nerves a little. Have restarted the Xbox after about an 1/2 hours rest and loaded Incredibles. Works fine. No flashing light anymore and just completed 2 levels in just over 1 hrs (quite satisfied with myself as I am a games noob).

So, I suppose I should wait a little while and see if it continues to be OK with other games and if so, assume the EA Sims is rubbish. However, do people think I should return the consle anyway just because I got the flashing RED light? I don't want it to be a dormant fault and it re appear in couple of months!

    Thanks in advance....

BTW Captian.... It doesn't and didn't feel hot, it is on a flat surface and is position next to my TV. Seems to be sufficient ventilation. It does make the odd whirring..clickity click noise when the discs are loading but I suspect that is normal disc reading operation...nothing that sounds worrying anyway (though I've not heard an Xbox in action so don't know whether it's supposed to be silent or not).

Incidentally (sorry to go on)... I'm playing on a Sony Wega LCD (KLVL23M1)... I assume my screen won't be damged providing I don't leave it on a frozen picture for too long.... though the wife was concerned that the little Incrredibles logo in the tlc might sink in a ghost image...

There will be a number in the top right corner of the screen. If it happens again, record the number and post it here. That will give me (and you) a good idea what is the cause of the problem and whether it is likely to be a permenant error.

Chris - If I recall the number was 07. Though it happened on a few occasions and I can't remember if there were other numbers previously. Any thoughts?

Don't worry about the screen . LCD doesn't suffer from burn in.

It could be the EA game - some games are known to screw up the xbox - i remember Star knights of the old republic could crash(one of many bugs) the xbox and give you a red light.
Try doing a google search for the xbox error code that might tell you whats wrong.
