Hello everyone!

I have been reading these forums for weeks now, can someone please put my mind to rest on this issue!

I am looking for a tv to go in an extension. I will be the main user of this set, and I can categorically tell you all it will be used for
Halo 3 on XboxLive
Sky Sports 1,2,3, news
Xbox Live HD Downloads (720P at the moment)
I'm sure you get the picture here! (sanctuary from the mrs)
I am after a big screen and really fancy the panasonics. However I am worried about screen burn because of the way I know I am going to use this set(gaming and sky sports logos etc) what do you think? should i be worried? There are some really go deals out there at the moment.

The screen is to be wall mounted approx 13 foot from the sofa.

On the LCD side i have looked at the bravia t3500 and v3000 46"

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks.

You should be worried enough to be careful when it's new. reduce brightness, switch out of dynamic. I'd avoid the Sky Sports News channel for long sessions, just asking for trouble. But normal Sky Sports (you should get HD by the way) is fine.

What sort of construction is this extension? Is it like a conservatory?

Ah ok so you shouldn't suffer too much with sunlight reflections then. Something like a PZ70 would seem to fit the bill.

If you are planning to watch a lot of sport, I would be very careful about buying a LCD. I don't know about the exact Sony models you mention but a lot of LCDs can be dreadful with fast moving action and panning, particularly with SD material. I think that's still much more of a problem than screen burn on recent plasmas. 100Hz can help but it also can introduce artefacts.

My local Laser shop has a lot of screens in a small area and if you go in on Saturday afternoon, most of them will be showing football. The amount of ghosting on some screens is frightening. This would irritate me to no end. Make sure you test the model you are planning to buy with the material you are planning to watch. A lot of LCDs are demo'ed with animation. They are very good at it but this is not a proper demo... for a LCD, it's the equivalent of test-driving a car on a newly surfaced straight road at 45 miles an hour...one really should test going round corners too.

It has to be said that non-AV specialist shops rarely set the TVs up with anything other than the standard showroom settings so viewing them in a store such as currys etc is often not a fair representation of their actual image quality when the settings are tweaked. I know - it makes decisions very difficult !

I would really appreciate your comments on this one

I am seriously considering the Pioneer 7th Gen offer in currys for £898.
I shave spent a long time reading the Pioneer forums on here, and I realise that if I shop around I could get a full hd Panny Pz42 for around £900.

Fickle as this may sound, I love the styling and looks of the Pioneer to the extent I would take the gamble of getting a good set against the claims of the bad press about smearing and customer service from pioneer.

Do you guys reckon it is worth the risk? I doubt Currys will extend the warranty beyond a year for free. My budget for this set is around 900.

Thanks for the advice so far, I am deffo going plasma now for the sport aspects. This is my first hdtv, the tosh R/P is slowly dying after 10 years service!:)

Buy Panasonic with confidence, Screen burn is no longer a problem with them and screen retention can be overcome with its inbuilt screensaver facility( basically a vertical white line crosses the screen, say, for a minute) I am very happy with my PH10
