i've borrowed a friend my netgear dg632 and hes managed to connect to the internet and xbox live but we can't private chat, join each others games or anything but other people can join his games and chat to him, is it anything to do with my old ip or something being on the modem?

Firstly upgrade the firmware and then follow Shadowmans guide...I bet just turing on uPnP will fix it.

Remember your mate have to do similiar on his setup as you both need "open" NAT connections.

Get the latest firmware for the router. If after that you still get strict with UPnP on, turn it off and put your Xbox in a DMZ (instructions on how to do this are on my website)

I've emailed you. Anyway they are both a problem. Moderate is still an issue, he needs to sort his out as well.
