Help with weekend in London

For places to stay, take a look at Travelodge or Premier Inn. They have locations that are pretty central nowadays. Wandsworth, Putney, Waterloo, London Bridge.

As for Croydon, it's great for transport but it can be a little hit or miss in terms of desirability. You'd want to be near to East Croydon Station if that's your choice.

If you're driving from Leeds you'll likely want to stay North of the river to reduce the drive time (unless you fancy driving round the M25 to somewhere like Croydon) - @Liquid101's post has some good advice.

As for accommodation, you could always look at AirBnB - a very quick look suggests there are a number of places that are under £90 a night :)

I stayed at the aloft which is near the excel exhibition in docklands, very easy to get to heart of London via dlr ( 200 yards from hotel )
