Hi,I've been given a Netbook from a workmate who she said her girl has been using & it's stopped booting-up.
I tried to install windows 7 on it,but knew strait away the HDD was dead.
I've replaced the HDD & installed Windows 7 Ultimate as she gave me no discs with the netbook.
The Netbook now is up & running but I'm not happy with it's performance & I think it should have it's Vista home premium OEM running on it.

The netbook is a Compaq Presario V6500 & can't seem to find OEM download on the Microsoft website or on the Digital River website & so out of ideas ?

Just to add I have the legit Product key on the netbook.

The Compaq Presario V6500 appears to be a full sized Core 2 Duo laptop rather than a netbook.

Vista's interface is a little clunky, generally on marginal hardware Windows 7 feels snappier, so speaking generally it wouldn't help. Which hard drive did you put in the machine? That makes a big difference to how responsive it feels.

    It's a 250gb blue WD hard drive.
Going by Speedfan the GPU & CPU are running hot,so not sure why.
Thermal paste maybe needed or a dodgy fan :-/
Will need to open it up.

Yes I would also say laptop, but every google search even on HP's own website use the word Netbook...Weird !!

HP's website is calling it a notebook for me, not a netbook.

Laptops do tend to run near the thermal limits of stuff because weight is important so the smaller the cooling system the better. As long as the temperatures are below 80°C it's unlikely to be a problem.

I take it that it's got a sensible amount of RAM?

I actually thought Netbook & Notebook are the same thing :-/.....My bad :)

The Laptop has 2gb ram & it's running a dual CPU at a poor 1.9GHz.

I'm using Speedfan for temps & I know that speedfan can be out,but if true then it's running hot.
Here is what speedfan is showing

    GPU:86c
    HD0:33c
    Temp1:53c
    Core:56c

They show on speedfan with a flame except the HD0 & that shows with a green tick.
Could it be BIOS related ?
When I press F1 to go in to the BIOS on start-up,I only have the Boot option.
It shows me the amount of memory installed & what type of CPU etc,but it does not let you do anything in BIOS except change the boot priority.
The fan spins crazy on start-up & then calms down as you would expect, but then for some reason it goes crazy again & you may not even be on the laptop when it does this,so not sure what's going on.

At this moment speedfan is now showing the follow & the fan is quiet......

    GPU:71c
    HD0:32c
    Temp1:40c
    Core:49c

Only the GPU has a flame on it.

Do you think having Windows 7 on the laptop adds to the overheating ?

This would not explain why the GPU is running the hottest going by the Temps ?
I'll be opening the laptop up sometime in the next few days when I'm off work & clean the fans etc.

As far as temperatures. there would be little difference between the w7 and vista.

Assuming that's under full load those temperatures are fine, surprisingly low on the CPU in fact.

Can you give a more specific description of what's wrong with it's performance?

The laptops fans are spinning very fast & the laptop takes a few seconds to respond (feels like lagging) to a request like opening an internet page or a software program etc.

On Windows 7 Ultimate you have those free Gadgets & so when you choose the CPU meter, the meter goes up to 80-90% a good few times & I've never seen this with any PC or laptop in the past.

Those Temps I gave had nothing running & so that makes it even worse :-/
