For sub 1k I'd personally go for the Marantz 7012.

Denon 4400 (which isn't much different to the 7012)

Don't know much about Sony/Yamaha gear.

1k prices you out of the higher end brands.

The Marantz 7012 is £1500. The Marantz SR7011 may still be available for under £1k if there are any left. Should be fine if you are not looking for eARC. (enhanced ARC).

Yeah sorry for the above, I thought the 7012/4400 had already took a price tumble.

That is a good question. I am not familiar with your HK AVR, but looking at the specifications and the reviews, it looks pretty good. If you upgrade to a more modern one, such as the Marantz, the three main areas where you may see an improvement are:

    1. 4K / HDR video pass through (only useful if you have or plan to get a 4K TV or projector)

    2. Audyssey room correction, this has a good reputation, the SR7011 is compatible with the Audyssey app, which allows you to tweak and customise the room correction. The usefulness of this to you will depend on your room and speakers. I find that it makes nice improvements to bass and the lower frequencies in my set-up.

    3. Atmos / DTS:X / Auro 3D If you want to add at least two in ceiling or upfiring speakers, these technologies provide an extra dimension of overhead sound. You can either playback native soundtracks that have this audio embedded, or you can use the upmixers to generate an overhead and immersive soundscape from any incoming audio. I have a 5.1.2 set-up with two upfiring speakers situated on my front left and right. I upmix all TV and movies using either the Dolby Surround or the DTS:X upmixer, and I enjoy the effects.

So, do any of those interest you, and why are you thinking of upgrading?

Less then a day isn't a long delay! :) some people reply years after they posted...

Improvement in what? A ~£400 Denon will be a massive improvement in features, but a downgrade in overall sound quality.

    Do you want/need new features?
Do you want better overall sound quality?
Do you want both of the above?
Do you want ot upgrade because you've got the itch to upgrade? (we've all been there!!)

Of I could get both features and sound quality.. Sound quality would be my first choice in preference.. I would say yes the itch is coming on.. Been a while since I upgraded but don't want to throw money away if you think I might not really get that much of a difference in sound quality etc.

Thank you again for all your advice and help

No thanks required. I'm no expert. I bought my first ever AVR Dec 2015 with help from people on here.

I chip in where feel I can, then bow to the masters when I get corrected! :D

Generally as a rule, you need to spend more then you did on your previous AVR to get better sound quality. A 10 year old AVR @ 1.5k RRP will still sound better then a 400 quid modern AVR.

    Look at the stats

The AV123 has a 15" driver, 350 watts and reportedly goes down to 15-17hz. The Klipsch 29hz, 200 watts and a 12" driver.

You'd need to spend some pennies to better your current subs.
