Help with hdmi output on Sony Strdg910 amp

As the title suggests, since buying the above amp 4 months ago, I have been unable to get decent sound through hdmi.
I have a PS3 connected to the amp via hdmi and optical, and when watching films via the optical, the sound is much fuller and there is plenty of bass. Through hdmi, the bass is almost non existent and sounds quite flat. Lossless sound on blu-ray's is the same.
I also have a new Xbox 360 which is also connected via hdmi and i have the same problems when playing music from the dashboard, ie not much bass.
The amp is connected to Mordaunt Short Genies, which are more than capable, I just cannot understand why optical sounds so much better.

I have been through the settings time and time again and pretty sure it is all set up properly.

I know it is a budget amp but I would expect hdmi to be at least as good as the optical if not better. Is there anyone out there suffering the same problems.

Please help, its driving me crazy.

I have had this connect to my kit for a few months and dont have the same problem, i am using mordaunt short advants and the sound over hdmi sounds great to me. You have set the ps3 to output pcm audio over hdmi, you need to do this or you wont get the hd audio.

i have noticed there seems to be more bass over optical, but to me it seems very harsh, over hdmi i still get the bass, but it sounds better its tighter and not as boomy as optical.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes its all set up properly, pcm etc. You could be right, but i found it strange how there is such a big difference.

Just been watching Attack of the Clones, the scene where Obi Wan is chasing Jango Fett through the asteroid field. When the explosions go off, there is hardly any bass though hdmi, yet through optical, it sounds fab.

if you are watching dvds i would set the sound output to bitstream over hdmi, because what you are finding is that the onbaord decoding of standard dolby and dts and converting to pcm is poor on the ps3, if set to bitsrtream this audio will pass straight to the 910 for decoding, so you wont need the optical but it will pass the bitsream information straight to the 910.

When watching dvd on the ps3 switch the ps3 to output audio as bitstream, only when playing games or watching blurays then switch the ps3 back to pcm.

If you do it this way dvd will sound better and you wont need the optical connected, are bluray discs the same? over hdmi my discs such as casino royal have plenty bass when using the uncompressed track.

Thanks for your help and quick replies.

happy to help:smashin: seems the onboard decoding of standard dolby digital to pcm is not very good. I use my tosh e-1 for dvds so i leave my ps3 for bluray so i have mine set to pcm. A side not however you can leave it se t to bitstream and only change to pcm if your bluray has dolby true hd, as for some reason the ps3 when set to bitstream will still pass a uncompressed pcm track over hdmi so if you select a uncompressed pcm track it will come through ok, but if your bluray has a dolby tru hd track it will only come through as standard dolby digital, so for dolby true hd audio the ps3 must be set to pcm.
