When you have a DVD(movie) playing in the PS2 pause it. Then bring up a menu by pressing "Select" on the PS2 controller. Go into the "Setup" option on the menu and select "Audio". Check that the "Audio Digital Out" option is set to "On". When this is set to "ON" three more options appear, "Dolby Digital", "DTS" and MPEG". These options can be set to ON/OFF. Obviously set them to "ON"

    Wolfeh,

With regards the above, check your Marantz receiver has an MPEG-II decoder built in. If it doesn't, leave MPEG set to OFF. A PCM stream should then be sent to the receiver instead.

Hi- I adjusted my PS2 using 'Setup', 'Audio', like you mentioned, and when I turned Dolby Digital to 'On' and played a dvd it came up 'Dolby digital 2/0'. When this was originally switched to 'Off' it said 'Digital Stereo' -but I couldn't hear a difference.

    What would the difference be?

    Thanks.

If it's DD2.0 it might be DD2.0 surround.

I thought Dolby Digital automatically meant 5.1 in stereo -what would Dolby Digital 2.0 be -it's a contradiction surely?

No, Dolby Digital just means it's a digitally-encoded Dolby soundtrack which can be any number of channels, not necessarily 5.1.

DD2.0 could be stereo, but it could also be Dolby Surround because the surround channels are encoded onto the L&R channels.

I'm not even going to try explaining the Dolby numbering system because it's a terrible numbering system. But you can enjoy the confusion about it on this thread:
