This is my first post, so please bear with me.

I am considering buying a DVD Recorder with a HDD, and I am impressed by the Panasonic (DVD-R,-RAM, HDD) models. However, I am looking for a model that will play back all DVD recordable media.

I had a look in "Which Video and Widescreen TV" and it says that the Panasonic E55H and E85H models could do this. I emailed Panasonic to enquire and they said that their models could only play back -R,RAM and normal DVD Video.

    Who is right here?

    Best wishes

    Paul

The format of recordable DVD's is only relevant when doing the actual recording. Once that has been completed the disk is in effect free from the constraints of the formats and should play on the vast majority of players/recorders regardless of its origional format, except for perhaps some of the older models that were released before DVD recorders were available.

A good site for a list of compatable formats for DVD players/recorders is Here

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for your very interesting reply. Incidentally, this is the reply I got from Panasonic customer services a few months back:

    ------

Thank you for your email enquiry.

The DMRE85 DVD recorder can only record or playback DVD-RAM or DVD-R disks.
It can also record or playback from the HDD and it can playback
pre-recorded DVD Video disks from retailers. It cannot record or even
    playback DVD-RW, DVD+RW, or DVD+R.

I trust that this information has been of assistance to you. If you have
any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Regards,
    Customer Support

You have to treat comments like that with a pinch of salt. Panasonic are covering themselves should the disks not play - the DVD-RW almost certainly will.

I have never had any trouble with DVD-RW playing on the Panasonic
