First I think you need to consider the space it's going in to establish the size of screen you need. Once you have established size and whether you want a traditional tube telly, or a funky new flat panel like plasma or LCD, then you have narrowed your choices down quite considerably.

What I would suggest then is going and buying a couple of specialist magazines from you local Smiths and see what they recommend in the size/shape screen you are looking for. You can also post here for suggestions once you have narrowed things down a little bit more.

Many would suggest that you go and get a demo from a retailer and decide yourself from there. But to be honest, if you are that much of a novice, you may not notice some of the differences and many shops won't demo sets to the best of their ability anyway. If you go with one that's been recommended by a couple magazine of magazines, you'll probably be more than happy.

you also need to decide whether you are worried about HDTV yet and also if you want a telly with tuner and speakers built in or a screen connected to sky or freeview and seperate speaker sysytem

Lurk here for a while and try to learn as much as you can. Choosing which TV to buy is only half the work, you then have to work out how to connect everything and that can get very complicated indeed. However, if you do your research first you should end up with a system that you're happy with. I spent ages on forums before I bought my PWD6 and Denon 3805 amp and I'm very pleased with them.

The hardest part was getting a good demo. I saw several PWD6s in shops but none of them would have convinced me to buy and I didn't see any other plasmas that I liked. However, after reading this forum I took the plunge. When set up with decent sources and cables I get an excellent picture which exceeded my expectations and looks far better than any of the shop demos.
