Hi
I am looking for a decent home cinema package.
I have looked at the sony STR-DE585 & the marantz 4200 & 5200.

What is the difference between the marantz 4200 & 4300 and
the 5200/5300.

Also could anyone tell me what the best speakers are to go with
these amps.

I have a budget of around £600-800 already have a dvd player
sony dvp-ns305.

I did consider the sony package HT-DDW840 at one stage but got
put off by some posts on this site about the sony speakers being
no good can anyone clarify this?

Thanks
John

The difference between the two amps in that the newer models have Prologic II, Which is vital if you want "true" 5 channel sound from a normal stereo source(tv channel).

For that budget, I would get:-

the Marantz 4300 amp (£300) its good 4 music and movies.

1. MISSION FS2AV NXT SPEAKER PACKAGE £400
2. MISSION CINEMA M72 AV SPEAKER PACKAGE (M72s + M7C1 +M7DS) £300
3. MISSION FS-1 A V SPKR PACKAGE (looks amazing) £350
4. SONY SA-VE835 SPEAKERS £500

Go to your local hifi store, and demo the ones that you like.

Thanks for the advice will look into it.

My mate has a set of bose acoustimass double speakers.
These sound great but slightly out of my budget range, could
anyone tell me what the bose acoustimass 6 single speakers
are like these are only £400 ish but have not heard them.
Would these speakers be OK for the marantz 4300 amp?
Anyone got any views on these.

In the case of the Marantz 4300 & 5300 both have newer processors, true Dolby EX and both DTS ES Discrete & Matrix as well as Circle Surround II. They appear to have been tweaked amplification wise as well.

For speakers its worth checking out the second hand market and also the Hardware/Classified Forum. Or maybe look at some ex-demo speakers at a dealer. You´ll be able to pick up much better speakers for your money. i.e Kef Q15´s, B&W 602 S2 etc. Both older models now but much better than the likes of the Bose speakers.

Actually the 5200 has pro logic two also

and Pro Logic 2 doesn't provide "true" five channel sound either :D

I have noticed that the mission m72 speaker set hasn't got a subwoofer.
Will this make much difference, I know there would be quite a lot
of bass coming from the front two speakers already but would
this be sufficient for the rumbles of movies?
I know I should go and demo one but cant get the time to do this
for a couple of weeks any help or opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks
john.
