Thought i'd try one of you lads before i try the pc section

Got to stick this cable in (mate took the old one out ) and i'm not sure where to put it.

The 'C' is the burner, B is the dvd drive, which i think is the slave.

So do i stick the A end of the cable in A on the motherboard. Then the C end of the cable in the burner ( 'C' ), and then B of the cable in the dvd drive ('B')

    Cheers :smashin:

Stick the blue connector (A) on the IDE cable into the motherboard slot (A)

The normal convention for IDE cables is that the last connector on the cable goes to your master device with the other going to the Slave. However this really does not matter on modern PC's UNLESS you have the drives set to CSS (Cable Select). CSS means that the order you connect the drives determines if they are Master of Slave devices. If you set the drives themselves to be Master and Slave then you can connect the connectors anyway round you want it just that most people still adhere to the convention of last connector for Master.

    Confused? ;)

looks like you could do with sticking the hoover in there mate ! that left-hand board has a film of dust that can really cause things to heat up too much and cause failures.

    Yup, A to A, B to B, C to C, and blown to bits :)

And definitely get the hoover in there (nozzle attachment to the flexi tube) carefully and get rid of all that dust!

I gather it was all working before the 'mate' nicked the cable?

If so you'll have no problems. :)

Actually i think my hard drive is on its way out. It wouldn't boot up. So my mate had a look and took the cable from the hard drive out and used the one from the burner instead. It booted up fine, so we thought it was a faulty cable. Only thing is, it done it again the other day so it must be the hard drive, as two cables going faulty in a week would be 1000/1

I bought two new cables but only ever saw how the hard drive was connected. Even with the new cables it would not boot up. Then i took the hardrive out myself and put it back in and it works now

I needed to get the cable sorted for the burner so i could back up my files before it dies on me
