Hi everyone!Help,i've come here as im soo stuck on what 3dtv to buy!

Ive read the reviews and gone and had a look down the stores...Now the choice seems almost even harder for me!

Ok,here's where i'm at.Since along time ago the LG LW550T caught my eye.It seemed brighter in 3d and just seemed to have more depth than the other *more expensive* shutter glasses models from all other manufacturers!I like how you can make the 3d come out of the screen and vice-versa.

But,the other day i decided to go with my Dad down Comets and have a real good try b4 you buy with a second opinion from my Dad.

The LG was still strong to me,but my Dad found it hard to concentrate on esp with things coming out of the screen. And i had to agree so did i a bit.

I had a look at *one of* the Pana's it seems all the "review sites" rave about ,the GT30.
Personaly i could not see the fuss!3D was dark on the set and did not appear to be so deep!So go figure,i can't see my self buying the pana!

Then we whent on to the Samsung D8000.And Wow,it was bright and crisp in both 2d and 3d,tho no quite as deep as the LG it seemed in 3d.The samy was also very easy on the eyes which both myself and my Dad noticed and commented on.

The other TV we looked at was the Sony jobby, which, was ok and fairly cheap for a Sony.

Here's where my frustration lays in choosing a 3d set,and hope some one here can help me?

ATM i'm ruling the pana out.Right move? The reviews it seems would say otherwise, but im just not that impressed with what ive seen in comparison.I'm now kinda torn between the D8000 and still the LG550.Obviously they both have there strengths and weaknesses.

LG Strengths = Strong 3d effect, cheaper, cheap glasses, wider viewing angle(horizontal).

LG weaknesses = Average 2d,Low res in 3d,high input lag.

Samsung Strengths=Bright Picture(both 2d and 3d),great 2d,high res crisp 3d,great asthetics, built in HD freesat and usb recording. Both Tv's are smart so that's ok by me!

Weaknesses=High price and seemly not so much 3d depth, some sets have high amount of crosstalk and shadowing.

Now can anyone with experiance of these tv's ease the stress i feel about getting the "right tv for me"?

I will be using the tv for 3d films alot, and a fare bit of gaming.Does anyone have experiance particularly with gaming on these TV's...Does the loss in res on the LG subtract from the graphics detail in gaming? Is the Samsung far superior in this department?Does the LG tho have great depth in 3d on all things inc gaming,or is that just the LG demo fooling me a little?Whats the samsung like in 3d gaming? It looks like it would be awesome for detail!...But not as strong in depth. Both Tv's obviosly have input lag,
neither got good reviews for this(Tho supposedly turning off TruMotion) on the LG helps this alot?!Is that true(no pun itended) :) ?
Lastly(don't want to prattle on too much more than i have done)...But why the panasonic range?I dont get it.

I think I will take some usb 3d content and compare all sets again.Maybe this will help me decide.

Sorry for all my long post, but when you going to part with £1000 for a tv you want to get it right dont ya :))

It sounds like you already know that passive makes the most sense. You didn't mention Phillips in your line-up, from what I've read they seem to have the lowest lag of all the passives, see Philips 42PFL7606H - DigitalVersus

Hey thanx Ari33,
Yes for 3d depth passive seems to me by my eye unbeaten.
However the samsung was so crisp in 3d(and 2d)that it did make you go wow for that reason.
The Phillips use same screen as LG right,so should be the same 3d experience i imagine? Thanks for the link. How come both Toshiba(from ive read)and Phillips have lower lag, this does not quite make sense.Does the fix of turning off TruMotion on the LG speed things up in gaming, dont know if you know...that it works for the LW550T?
Anyway thanks.Merry Crimble to you :p

Depth is fantastic on my GT30, amazing in fact. It all depends on what you watched(not all 3D is that good), the environment and the TVs settings. The Panasonics can be seen as darker and the glasses only make them more so. But in a home environment its not that bad and on the plus side you get a lot of depth with very deep blacks. Not all 3D pops out the screen, in fact most good 3D concentrates on depth.

How much 3D viewing will you be having compared to 2D? whats the set going to be for? Panasonics have amazing 3D with stunning detail, ton of depth and accurate colours, Samsung plasmas are brighter sets but blacks aren as deep and out the box coulors aren't as good, Panasonics also have almost non existent cross talk.

Passive are fine for 3D but I prefer plasma for 2D, you get better motion, deeper blacks, more detail with higher motion resolution than LCD.
Theres also viewing angle restrictions on passive sets, active plasmas dont have this issue. Id def go passive on LCD due to cross talk with active on LCD, otherwise active plasma all the way for me.

Before discounting the Panasonics Id have a proper demo, Ive not seen better 3D than on my GT30.

Any processing a set uses will increase lag.

The only thing I found the passives (LG) were better at was having slightly lighter glasses, the passives (Pannys and sammys ) have better overall 3d performance (IMO). When choosing my own 3d set in the future, I cannot in all honesty see myself going for a passive and reducing the resolution in my HD viewing. After an hour into a film (I have watched a few films on both types) I cannot justify the passive over the active, which Is why I probably still don't own a 3d set.

Some people do not see the difference or loss in res, others after a while do. I saw it straight away and could not get on with it but also I could not get on with the flicker from the pannys or the overbright and sometimes tiresome cross talk of the sammys.

The pannys are the best set for 3d I have seen so far :lesson:

Thanks for your posts people!I take heed that that i should not count out the panny sets atm.I will def go back with some 3d content on a MS and try them all again.

SystemDemon:When you say "passive's" you mention "(Pannys and sammy's)"You mean Active(sammy and panny's) are better iyo?!Also the GT30 is a Plasma set?!
Is it the best for lag?

Anyways thanks for for all your help.Going to go back instore 1.with a demo 2.Ask them to setup an Xbox360 or Ps3 up(dont see why not?!).

All i want really is a nice looking TV for playing movies and games, one with good depth(like Passive),with good res for gaming.Im one of those "don't notice the res drop so much" people :)so im not to bothered about movies(not too sure about gaming yet). Will come back post on my results, preference, ulimately the one i decide to get.Thanks.

Think it was a typo he meant active. lag is lower on plasma with the lowest on the Panasonics. Shop floors arent the best place to demo plasmas due to the lighting, with active 3D the lighting and other sets around will mean more noticeable flicker. Sets in big stores often aren't setup well and whats being, fed to the sets can vary a lot. Its their sales environment, they make the sets look better or worse depending on what theyre pushing. Specialists are better with service and many have demo rooms where you can control the environment.

Any processing a set uses will increase lag.
And this is why interleaved 3d gaming has the least lag of all , as it needs no 3d proccessing.
I think lg may need to turn off a few more proccesses while in pc/game mode.
It's amazing to see a tosh at stock with around the same lag maybe less than a lg with pc label, it really does shine though when put in game mode, lag is minimized even more giving super fast reaction times.
Allso unlike lg where you need pc input for best lag you can use game for the tosh which keeps the colours nice and sweet unlike lg's pc label which dulls the image down somewhat, tosh's pc label allso dulls the image but game label is sweet and that's a sound obvservation.

Gaming is great on passive, at a pc 1080p res you can see the res lost/added horizontal aliasing but it is nowhere near a game/film killer 1080p still looks very nice.
Saying that though i would jump ship any day to a active if i could find one that suited my needs but there is none, lg comes closest but they have colourbugs in some of their 3d options in both plasma and lcd, panasonic sound awsome but only do sbs/OU and frame packing so that is a ship that is sunk before it left the dock.
Phillips have horizontal panning issues so that's a no go.

I'm in the same boat as op, about to buy a tv but do'nt know which one, everything and all roads lead back to the tosh i have now so i'm 99% sure i'll just get the bigger size 47" as it suites my needs and will be as bright in a years time as it is on day 1.

I agree that the best 3D I've seen came from a panny. Even so I ended up with the sammy 59d6900 for value for money and still a very very good performance.

I did mean sammys and pannys were active, sorry !

Doesn't your set drop resolution when watching 3d? due to a design flaw or something?

I don't think there can be any serious doubt that the LG (or Toshiba passive) will provide the best 3D (active has just too many negatives - and that isn't intended as a comment on the cost of the glasses either).

A crucial point, most commonly overlooked, is you need to live with the set (rather than just limit yourself to a quick 10 minute demo) and the fact that passive sets are incredibly easy to live with is simply overwhelming if you bother to read the majority of posts on this Forum (that assumes you actaully want to watch a fair bit of 3D :))

..of course if you don't then you get a different answer ;)

Really?? Well I haven't counted it nor come across that being reported when I investigated the tv. Looks fine to me. With nice natural colours and incredible detail both 2D and 3D.

There is some mention of it Here

It looks to be only the LED versions though.. i assume yours is plasma

Yes 6900 series is a plasma tv, I couldn't watch an LCD nor LED...I wouldn't have mentioned natural colours then would I ;):)

It's a flaw with Samsung's lower LCD/LED models. AFAIK, it doesn't affect their full-HD plasma range or their flagship D8000 LED model.

Like most people comparing models passive or active I went with Sammy D7000 40 now you can get the 46 for same money, it has great depth colours plus set looks awesome in design set up with onkyo 608 av system and panny 110 3d player brill for 2-3 d conversion plus in game mode with xbox 360
FIFA 11 black Ops (brill in 3d) BF3 all play fine, plus Forza 3 with fanatec steering wheel is good for all the excitement and awe you need except for a bigger screen. So in all well pleased with the tv. But at the end of the day you have to be happy with it yourself whatever you decide to buy.

I was set on getting a LG passive but they have an insane amount of input lag when gaming so if you use your tv for gaming i would go for Panasonic VT30 or Samsung D8000 upwards. Some indepth revies on Hdtvtest.co.uk
