Help - Setting Sound Level on Speakers

When setting up my 5.1 speakers I find that if I have the volume set reasonable I can't hear the centre and if I turn it up to hear the centre the effect sound from the fronts is deafening.

Doesn't matter whether I use auto setup or a SPL meter, the results are near identical.

Obviously I can manually reduce the sound level on the fronts but I'm confused why I need to do this.

If I have set each of the speakers to 75dB using the test tones why doesn't that work.

At the moment, I can't see the point of the auto setup or SPL meter if I end up doing it by ear.

Front and centre speakers are Canton CD50.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Nigel
