    Hi everyone,

My friend has broken the power socket to his laptop and can no longer turn it on as it has ran out of battery. Is it possible to put the hard drive into an external case and plug that into another computer via usb and then access the documents?

I wasn't sure if this would work because of the xp operating system on the HDD but wouldn't the xp just be files?

Thanks for your help in advance,

    Ken

You should be able to do that, but if you can fit the hard drive to another computer (laptop) and boot with it you should be able to retrieve all you documents that way.

Adding a HDD to an external case, even though it has an OS on it should be no problem. I do it a lot at work to recover files on dead PC's or HDD's with a damaged boot sector etc. If the PC tries to boot from the disc just leave the external case powered off until the PC has booted. You can then just access the documents as you would on any other HDD connected to the PC.
Depending on the age of the laptop though wouldn't it be worth getting the power connector repaired? Shop around and you may get it fixed for around £50 (although approx £100 was the more common price when I was looking).

Cheers for all your help guys. I've already got an external case so i'll just use that.

    Kind regards,

    Hi,

The laptop is 4 years old, so he wants a new one anyways. But I think the power plug just needs a bit of soldering so it should be a diy job.

    Thanks again
