    Hi ALL,

   I am going MAD

I have a wall plate with phono conectors onit - I have a component video cable coming out of the wall ready for soldering (I have tried 2 times by the way and no joy)

The cable is made up of 4 parts :

    1) The Conductor (in the centre surrounded by a plastic sheif)
    2) A Foil Shield
    3) Braid Shield
    4) A jacket

ok so I discard (4) The Jacket. I solder the Conductor (1) into the phono connector, BUT what do I do with (2) The Foil Shield and (3) The Braid Shield ???

I get a picture that is so crap, has interference and loses colours - I have tried to remove (2) and (3) and I have tried to wrap them back around the conductor !!! But I either get no picture or just Green and interference !!

I know what I am doing with parts (2) and (3) is messing this up but I need a step by step guide - anyone done this OR got a step by step guide ???

HELP ME PLEEEEAAAASEEE (I need this working it been 2 weeks !!) sob sob

    Thanks way in advance.

    Rocky :lease:

Connect the centre conductor to the centre pin on the phono plug.
Strip the foil back as far as you've stripped back the outer jacket.
Unravel some of the braid, twist it together and solder it to the outer conductor of your plug. :)

Do I REMOVE the silver foil ? or just leave it hanging ?

Not to worry, DIY cables aren't too hard as long as you can find the hot end of a soldering iron!

If you go to the DIY section you should read mylo's "Homebrew Cables" sticky to give you a start.

I always remove the foil completely - you don't want any loose conductors which might cause a short circuit.

When it comes to unravelling the braid, just unravel enough so that you can twist it together and get a decent amount of material to solder with. I don't usually tin cables but I think you should if you're doing it properly. If you've got flux cored solder (which you should) then it isn't really necessary. :)
