I was wondering if there are hacks for Compact Av Systems? My firend has a Sony HDC 5880 and wants to be able to play my region 1 discs on it. Has anyone heard of a hack for this please?
    cheers

    Have a look at:
    http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks

It's the definitive source of compatibility/region hacks. Have a thorough look through and see if you can see your player.

Firmware is the software stored in the DVD player.
Hardware is the actual IC chips etc.
Firmware is stored on a chip and can be updated over a PC link.

Thanks for the help, I think I'll just tell her to buy the DVD's when they come to region 2!!

I did come across a site that said that there are no hacks for Sony, the equipment has to be chipped - I wonder if that's true?

    cheers

I believe Sony are slightly more zealous about region coding than the other major electrical companies (propbably due to their large 'software' interests). Thus the majority (if not all) have to be 'chipped' rather than use a handset hack.

Sony pioneer samsung panasonic all have to be chipped as they have DVD lisence chinese taiwanese un lisenced manu facturer have hand set hacks, only a few major brends have engineeers who would risk their career over a handset (that makes them no money) hack!!!!!

Not sure why Samsung is on that list its a korean firm and most of its dvd players/systems are region hackable via the remote they ship with. In fact they often don't bother changing the hack at all and the same hack works on many other samsung players. Pioneer systems made in china to Pioneers specification often have easy hacks too. I'm not sure about how Panasonic fares on average but Sony is very anti multiregion on its players so tends to need a special remote or chip. The chinese players are still paying the dvd license fee. I think only Apex was found not to be paying the royalty. The royalty is a very small amount of money anyway I believe. I would guess in the region of $1-2 but I don't actually know.

rw1 - go looking around for a hack, the savings you can make a just one box set are amazing (friend bought Buffy (??) for £28 instead of £60).

Most big stores are RRP and you can save a further 30$ easily by getting the R1 disc.

Sony players need a chip or a learning remote control (Philips Pronto etc). Up 'till recently I thought it was chip only, but the pronto hack works a treat and on many models.
    Try www.remotecentral.com

Funny that - I've just multi-region enabled my Pioneer DV-757ai with a remote control hack using a Philips Pronto :)

Certain models like the 757 can be done by remote offering a solderless upgrade. Rw1, you could also check www.dvdchips.co.uk for the Sony and relevant queries on all other models mentioned on this thread..
