I have had Sky family package for over a year now. I purchased Sky as I cannot get normal terrestrial televsion from my home - no signal.

Anyway, I am fed up of all the repeats, don't spend a whole lot of time watching television and when I do, there's nothing on. I would have probably been quite happy with a Sky+ box, as then i can watch programs of interest when it suits. But unfortunatley I need to be spending about £30 on a package for them to allow me to have a Sky+ box!!!

Anyway - the question is, if I were to cancel my Sky subscription, what channels would I still be able to watch through my Sky dish?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Remove the card, those that are still there you can "obviously" watch and then add the three FTV channels (ITV1, CH4 and Five) which are accessible with an ex-subscrption smartcard, ITV2 atm is also FTV but it's future is still clouded.

Presumably you're tuned to an encrypted channel. Simply step forward through the programs to find what's unencrypted or see the list here.

Once you cancel, your card will become ex-subscription so you should still receive ITV1/2/3, C4 & 5.

    As crocodile said :)

With the possible exception that ITV2 could become subscription again depending upon the result of ongoing negotiations before you get around to cancelling.

Just looked at that ^^ link again.. - what's this about a one off payment of £150 ??

Freeview's free isn't it? As long as you've got a freeview box of course. What's the £150 charge for??

Suggest you delve a little deeper than the home page. Q&A might be a good place to start....

This has NOTHING to do with Freeview which is a different animal altogether.

So this topic still remains valid?

I.e - if you unsubscribe to Sky, you'll be able to recieve freeview channels through you sky dish?

    Nope.

Freeview is the marketing name for the digital terrestrial service, some of the channels on that service are subscription on digital satellite.
SKY use the term Free To View to identify those channels that are not subscription but require a smartcard, this is where most of the confusion originates with the two similar names.

If you cancel a SKY subscription you will get the FTA channels that are on Dsat plus the 4 FTV (Free To View) channels (ITV1, ITV2, CH4 and Five) that require either a FTV smartcard or an ex-subscription smartcard to view.
