    Please can somebody help me!

I should be over the moon. My wife just gave me the green light so I immediately took possession of a Hitachi 42PD5200.

So I set it up straight away and it's... Massive!

I have connected Sky+ via the RGB Scart which i thinks is the best possible connection from the Sky+ box (s-video is the alternative) directly into the Plasma screen's scart socket.

My problem is that I'm just not all that impressed with the picture!

I have read thousands of threads reffering to tinkering and settings to make the picture better and I know that Sky+ varies from channel to channel. Iv'e tried all that to no avail and for the money I have just spent I expected it to be better.

What makes matters worse is that the Father-In-Law has just got himself a Sony 32" LCD (KDL-L32MRX1) which has a utterly FANTASTIC picture when viewing digital tv through the mediabox supplied with it. And he hasn't connected it together with any scart, component, composite or s-video leads??

So, (getting there!) my questions are:

Will my plasma ever get as good a picture as the Sony LCD?
Has the Sky+ box got crap connections and has the Sony got great connections?
Is it purely the size of the screen & I would be better off with the 37" Hitachi or should i just ditch the plasma and get a Sony 32" and settle for picture quality over size? (what about the sky+ box though??)

HELLLLP! I just got the plasma and might be able to swap it for another as I took the display model and the shop is swapping it for a new one when they get stock.

    Micol,

If you do not like the picture quality of a properly set up Hitachi then I think that plasmas are not for you.

You say that yours is ex display - did you buy based on the quality of this display? If it was ok in the shop surely there is a problem with your set up.

There's nothing wrong with ALIS, my screen is ALIS and I couldn't be happier.

Everything I watch on it is good.

:nono: Stop bashing the ALIS, there really is no need!

    Jed,

You must have had some reason for choosing Hitachi, whether it be price, general look / size, or picture if you saw a demo.

If it's right for you, it's right. It really is as simple as that.

There is no 'right or wrong' option, just look at some of the preceeding threads, everyone has their opinion.

At the end of the day, you are the one watching it, it's in your house. If you're pleased with it, then that's the battle over.

Yes, I've got a Sony, should I go and get something else because someone said they didn't like Sony? Should I :censored:

I've seen a Hitachi 5200 series 32" set up next to one of the new Panny's and the picture was good. Not quite as good as the Panasonic, but £1000 less!

I saw the 32" model elsewhwere and all the displays looked rubbish except a Pioneer, which I think was connected with a VGA? SVGA? cable. The Hitachi still had a better picture than the others though.

I also saw a 42" model in another store and it looked crap. The PQ on almost every other set was better, barring a Hyundai and a PANASONIC!

I think a lot does have to do with the way they're set up and some people notice an improvement in PQ after a week or so, but that could be their eyes getting used to the new set too. Don't be disheartened yet. Try the adjustments first and have a look at the Hitachi in some different stores. If it still looks bad, then I would say change it.

I went with the Hitachi 3000 series, because it had good reviews elsewhere, this series i thought would have been tried and tested so to speak, and also i liked the thought of having the seperate media box to hide all the cables (so to speak).

However. I am not how can i say as far forward as the rest of you.

I do love dvd's and the only other thing i watch on t.v is the footie.
I do not have a seperates system like the rest of you as the wife would honestly kill me. :suicide: .
So at the minute i have my trusty Pioneer 303 setup but thinking of a upgrade to the NVS99 range.

I am just a little worried that i have now bought a dud.

    Jed.

Yes, it was the 37" Viera. They were both showing A Bugs Life, and the Panny was better, but not £1000 worth. The Hitachi's pic still looked good next to it (deeper blacks).

Sorry, my above post isn't really relevent, as it's comparing 32" to 37", but I'm sure you know what I mean if you compare like with like. I don't think I can spell " relevent" either!

    Wow, 17 new posts!

thanks for the interest guys. Although...not really answered any of my questions and I think you all sort of went off in a different tangent.

Anyway. I bought a Hitachi as it got good reviews and I liked the look of it!

Anyone got any ideas about my setup and weather the picture quality is mainly down to the size of the screen. (i,e 37" will be better than 42").

Well, the bigger the screen, the worse the picture is going to look, no matter which plasma you buy.

Have you tried all the different settings etc?
Are you using decent scart leads?
What about your Sky setup? Are you using a loopthrough via a VCR or DVDR?
That could affect the pic quality if either of those don't pass thru the RGB signal.

How does DVD playback compare? Is that similar to what you find with the pic from Sky? If DVD playback is good then it's not the plasma that's at fault, it's the quality of the feed from Sky.

Hope this helps, if you haven't done these checks already.

    Micol.

I've just re-read your post and realized I didn't really answer any of your questions.

I noticed myself when I had Sky+ installed that the picture wasn't as sharp as with Sky Digital, and that's on a 32" crt, so you would definitely notice the difference on a 42" screen. I don't think it's anything to do with the Sky+ connectors though.

LCD screens to me look good as long as the picture doesn't move. They do remind me of poster paintings. The colours just look a bit unreal.

I think you'll be able to get a decent pic with the Hitachi, but it won't be as good as that on a 28-32" crt (or plasma).

You can get Sky+ to look fantastic on a Hitachi. I've got a 42PD5300 and, on the high bitrate channels, the picture looks great. Occasionally, it does look crap but this is down to the channel rather than the panel (one night last week, ITV1 in particular was awful).

Spend some time getting the settings right on the panel and it'll make a HUGE difference to the picture quality. Duncan Wardle posted his settings for a 5200 on the forums and I used these as a start for setting up mine. If you've got any DVD's with the THX setup on them (e.e. Monsters Inc) try that as well.

Your pst there has got me thinking.

I have cable not sky. Will that be any better for my Hitachi,.
I have been led to beleive that the pic for cable is better than sky. Or am i dreaming. :D

:offtopic: Sky+ has been much maligned for having a 'soft' picture in comparison to straight sky boxes. :offtopic:

Get a copy of Digital Video Essentials, and run through that. The THX optimisers are, I'm led to believe, actually different for each DVD to get the best from each individual film. It won't be a bad start point though!

You can get DVE from the powerbuys section for the bargain price of £13 (last time I looked!)

    Good luck!

p.s. Sorry for my part in 'hijacking' your thread!

Thanks for the input guys. I have now got the picture looking much better but the wife is now totally convinced that it is too big and want's to take it back & get a 37" instead!!??
I'm a bit confused now, as the pitcure is better but could it be better still with a 37" screen? The wife also likes the Sony KDE-P37XS1, which I must be honest does look very nice, but what's it like & how old is it? Anyone know?

I have just got a Sony 37" and the PQ is superb, even on Sky. I went for 37" because the PQ on all the 42" screens was u/s unless you were at least 12 feet away and there wasn't room for all of us in that chair. There's more street cred in 42" but hey, you buy it to watch it.
