Help - Panny won't turn off

:lease: My Panny DMR-E500 Won't turn off.
It's in record mode which I set to record several programmes.
I decided to change some of the scheduled recordings. It was half way through recording a movie.
To stop recording you have to press the timer button.
I have tried this using both the remote and on the unit but nothing happens. I checked the batteries in the remote and they are working fine. But, as I said, I can't even stop the recording from the unit.
I can't turn it off either, by the remote or using the on/off on the unit.
I pulled the plug out of the wall socket and that shuts it down, but when I connect it up again, it does its system search and then carries on recording as before.
I pulled the plug and left it for 20 minutes and the same thing happened.
I'm not a noobie with these, I've had DVD-Recorders ever since they came out, but this is a new one on me.
Anyone got any advice - please

Press and hold stop on the front panel for more than 3 secs.
   Took about 10 seconds but it seems to be behaving itself now. Many thanks.
