Hi I've had sky for ages and I'm sick of it bar atlantic.

So I want to go another direction to get more TV and possible earlier access to more 4k content and thought about looking at other satellites but have no idea at all about what to do go for etc

I just invested in a new TV Panasonic 55cx802 and it has dual inbuilt tuners etc but don't know if it would be of use

    Can you help ?

Standards for satellite broadcast of 4k phase 2 have not been agreed yet and are unlikely to be for another year or two. Broadcaster are extremely unlikely to broadcast a reasonable amount of content until then. At present there are only a couple of demo channels and soon a German shopping channel. In the meantime the only likely source of "broadcast" content is going to be via broadband

    Hi.
There is, and is likely to be, little or no 4K content on satellite.
You can get some 4K content by broadband.
A dish with several LNBs will bring you a selection of foreign channels
One with a motor will get you many more.
How interesting you will find those depends on you.
You will get only Now and Next information, not the EPG.
For that with the free channels that you get with Sky you will be best with the existing dish and receiver.

?... 20 years ago maybe &/or on your 80cm 3 or 4? lnb setup ? There's well over 10,000 channels (nearer 13000 now) available on motorised satellite with 46 new satellites in 2015 & luckily English is popular, not least because of the American TV industry & of course Hollywood plus English tv & er.. football is popular too.

You do get 7 day EPG & on most satellite receivers on the UK channels & spanning different satellites & providers , timer programming for play &/or record / pause record rewind live tv / record several channels at once from epg or live & depending on the model & it's tuners, that can be anything up to 12 channels recording at once while viewing another channel or streaming or recording or watching any of the recordings anywhere in the recordings while they're recording and one can put recordings in other devices such as tvs/ pvrs / smart devices etc.. & it won't lock you out of your recordings if you stop paying sky because.... it ain't sky.

You can get access to far better quality HD [& high bit rate SD] on 'other' satellites & since this is AVFORUMS, that might be of interest to a lot of AV enthusiasts, satellite has already seen some of the earliest 4k tests ages ago but there's time yet for 4k & personally, I'd like to see high bit rate HD rather than 4k/UHD because it will just go the same way with some providers

    What's your problem?
I said that a dish with a motor will get you many more channels.
What has 20 years ago to do with the fact that I get all the channels on 4 satellites?
Obviously my comment on the EPG specifically did NOT refer to UK channels.
Maybe the "other" satellites do give better quality.
OP may well be interested in having a motor but again he may not.
If he is and if he's within your, very wide, area then he can come to you for it.
    We agree about 4K.

lol... stop stuttering & stick it on a motor logo - at least then you'll be answering with some experience - yes 20 years ago - typical 3 lnbs on an 80 & a selection of foreign channels (actually you could get quite a lot then (worked on a 23 year old motorised system this week - still doing it's job & used daily, just needed a bit of tlc & some copper slip )) ..

. and you said you can't get the EPG just now & next ??? of course you can & then some

.. using a sky box for free channels isn't fun either - you can't record/ can't rearrange channels & are forced to jump over channels - very annoying & deliberately limiting in use

I installed another motorised satellite system just a few miles north of you a couple of days ago, 70cm x 78cm.. eg 74cm on area [or even 70cm by the offset measure] - 40-50 sats .. even got on 26e & 7w - [just]... a day or two before that a zone 2 motorised ... got 68.5e to about the same west at your latitude .. they've got access to 10 times more satellites & channels than you.

Stuttering - what are you on about?
Methinks he doth protest too much.
And of course kevkbuk always agrees.
My experience goes back at least 20 years.

    I haven't yet had a motorised system, because I haven't wanted one.
Of course I have experience of others' systems, and OP is welcome to one, if he wants it!
