I am trying to see what the difference between the Old Pioneer VSXD811 and newer 714.

As far as I can tell, the newer one has PLIIx and DTS96/24

Can anyone tell me what these are???

Will I honestly notice a difference?

Will be using a Pioneer DV444, Sharp Nicam video, gamecube, and 5.1 speakers.

    Are either 7.1??

    Thanks

    Andrew

    p.s. Budget is about £180-£190

PLII converts a stereo signal into 5 channels surround the extra x means it converts it into 7 channels.

So with my current 5.1 I wouldn't see any difference at all?

Is it the same with the new DTS format? There are so many new formats now, my current amp has DTS and Digital!!

The older Pioneer is £20 less than the newer one (or the Denon 1705), would it be worth me spending the extra £20??

Should probably add, this is only for movies (and the gamecube), music is not important at all!!

I see, what about via freeview?

What is the extra DTS format DTS96/24?

I am thinking of going for the 811 at the moment as it is technically the next model up from the 714 and Denon 1705 even if it is last years

Some info here on DTS96/24. not to sure what that is myself I'm still in the process myself of upgrading.

Freeview is a stereo scoures at present so Pro IIx would work OK.

    Its all far too complicated!!!

Only have 3 to choose from yet they are all slightly different!

Do you know of anywhere with honest reviews of the Pioneer 811, Pioneer 714 and Denon 1705

Sorry for all of the questions, I don't want to get this upgrade wrong!!

DTS 96/24 Is a system which allows all six channels to be sent at 24bit 96Khz down a standard digital cable. This is mostly a 6 channel music format, and has vey limited software at the momment (3 discs two of which are queen). However after trying it out it does seem to be quite effective!!

How would a Harman Kardon AVR2550 compare to the other amps?

    Thanks

The older Pioneer amps (i had the 810) are good movie amps for action movies but are lousy for music and not that good for subtle films. The newest are better with all styles of film and music.
I would say it would be better to go for the 1705 with your choises as it will offer the best connectivity and has better surround steering than the pioneer.
The denon is also a 6 channel amp so when you want to upgrade......
