I've got a new Samsung SM-348B combo drive under Windows XP SP1 and installed the Easy CD Creator Basic s/w that is bundled with it. I've also downloaded the latest Samsung firmware (T505) and Roxio s/w update.

I've now tried 4 different types of CD-R (Sony, Imation, Maxell and unbranded) at write-speeds of between 8x and 32x and every one comes out a dud. Sometimes I get a disk that has a readable TOC but never one that is 100% readable.

Can anyone help me diagnose this problem further - its getting kind of expensive (7 CD-Rs thrown away so far)?:(

    Why not use CDRW's?

You can screw up until you get it right.

    btw, disable windows writing feature.

    Nathan,

Good idea to try a CDRW disk but I still want to copy a data CD for a work colleague who has just a CD reader.

I tried disabling the XP writer option in the drive propertires too - is that what you mean?

Yeah, right click on the drive, and disable the option.

Not sure- do you need ASPI?

How have you got the ide drives configured, you'd normally set a writer to secondary master.

I assume I don't need any ASPI drivers - there's no mention of it by Samsung, MS or Roxio as far as I can see.

John - yes the drives on the 2nd channel master.

My plan when I get some time (and patience) is:

Check PIO/DMA settings in device manager
Try some registry settings mentioned in KB article 308591
Try the KB article 320174 download (should be in SP1 already)

Oh, and buy some more CD-Rs. I'll try Nero as part of the diagnosis too.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
