Help needed with wireless router for newbie

I am not an expert with computer hardware so please go easy with me folks. I do obviously know how to use one.

At the moment I have Orange broadband with a non - wireless Desktop PC. The computer is connected to the Live Box modem via ethernet ( I think). So which wireless routers would you recommend to get wireless ?

I intend to use the wireless router with my Xbox 360 and get wireless Xbox Live.

Hi

Because you said you are connected via a modem, I presume the connection you have is ADSL. This is the only real thing to worry about when buying a wireless router.

There are many ADSL routers out there - I have always preferred Netgear models, but that's just personal preference. ADSL routers will replace your current modem (they have their own built in), and also act as a wireless access point. Most will have ethernet outputs as well to use with your desktop PC.

Hope this helps

Would I need an Xbox Live Wireless adapter and a router as well to get ' wireless ' Xbox Live? How would the connections work ?

And one guy in a shop said I needed a hub and an electrical product to make my computer wirelss.

Once you have got the wireless ADSL router set up correctly, you'll need to buy the wireless adapter for the Xbox. You'll then be able to search for wireless networks on your Xbox, and hopefully discover your one, and connect to it. Then you'll be able to play Xbox Live  .

One more thing I forgot to mention - there are several wireless standards that need to be taken into account when buying a router. They all begin with '802.11', followed by a letter.

'802.11b' is the slowest, operating at a peak of 11mbps. 802.11g is a lot faster at 54mbps, and then there are 'Draft N' routers, which if I were you I'd avoid for now, even though they're supposedly faster (I don't think the Xbox wireless adapter works with 'n' wireless networks.

So, go for an 802.11g router. Cheers,

Jezzer
