I am really not very good with computers, I have around £1000 to spend on a new system. I need it to be able to run microsoft word and possibly some games. I really don't have any grand aspirations, my old packard bell has given up on me and I need something pretty quick. I don't want to buy from somewhere like PC world as I always feel like I am getting ripped off. Any advice anyone?

    Hi mate

I have a PC I haven't used for a while that I am looking to sell on ebay. When I bought it, it was the best spec available and I am looking to get around £1,200 for it.

If you like I can send some info for you and tell you some more about it.:smashin:

If you want something to run Word, you only need to spend around £400.. for £1000 you will get quite a top end machine.

    Hi jimbo,

I am not sure about buying second hand, I suppose if I could get more for my money it would be worthwhile. What sort of machine would this be, £1200 is abit exspensive, but I suppose I could strech if that is what I need.

The spec is a Pentium II 300 with 64Mb of RAM, with an awesome 14 inch Belinea monitor - really crystal clear - 60hz refresh too.

It even has two graphics cards running together - an Orchid Righteous 3dfx and another one. I am not sure what make.

Soundblaster pro for true stereo sound with some Goodmans speakers and a 4 speed CD writer.

I am not sure I want to sell it to be honest, but for £1,200 it would be nice to see it going to someone who really needs it.

Oh and it runs Word like a dream.

I'd be interested in that machine too - you obviously know your stuff, so I would take it on trust. Do you have any pictures you could send me by email?

That sounds quite good, I have seen some new games recently that I would like to play, will this machine run doom 3?

I've spoken to the missus and she says that £1200 would be too much, I know it's a big ask but would it be possible to get this for more like a thousand pounds?

I'm quite amazed by how much technology has come along, if you live in the north I might be able to pick it up off you.

Most people I know think that Doom 3 is a load of rubbish. If you are interested I can throw in a copy of Wolfenstein 3d for £20.

I also have a copy of Wordpad you can have for another £20. Its a simpler version of Word for beginners.

Well... If you could do the computer and the two pieces of software for £1100 I would definitely be very interested. Would my existing word 97 documents be compatable with wordpad?

I was going to buy a copy of microsoft office for £45 guess I nearly got ripped off there.

P.s. cheers for the pictures, it looks really nice, I love those tft screens, will look great in my study

Hey thats not fair, I paid over £1,500 for this machine so it must be worth at least £1,000 and I bought it from Comet - a reputable supplier.

By the way Lawrenzini, its a Siemens Nixdorf PC, which again is a major brand. I made a mistake with the monitor, it is made by Time. Picture enclosed if I can work out how to post it. Don't worry it has a better picture than the other one I sent.

    When was it over £1500?? A £1500 computer bought xmas 2005 wouldn't be worth a £1000 now.

My car was £60k new but it doesn't make it worth £50k now its more like £10k and technology has a worse depreciation than cars, even my car :D

I still think this is a wind up and i've been sucked in :suicide:

Hey if you have a £60k car for £10K I'd be interested in that.

Don't worry about all these people telling you not to go ahead Lawrenzini, this machine will run Word just fine. In fact, I guarantee it - if I am wrong I will refund half your money mate.
