Am looking to download high def files and basically play them on my PS3!

    1) First of all what kind of files will the PS3 play?

    2) These are going to be big files obviously how would I go about transfering these files to my PS3 hard drive?

You have to convert the files to a format the PS3 will be able to read, ie MP4.

Other users on here swear by Video9 to convert the files. But personally I have found that it does not convert WMV files.

For that I find that SmartSoft video converter does the trick. Although I took one WMV hi-def trailer of Alexander about 130Mb, converted it to AVI, and it ended up at 12 Gb???

As for transferring the files to your PS3, you could use Red Kawa Media Centre or Red Kawa file server. Both are very easy to use and allow you to stream data from your PC to PS3 just as XP Media Centre allows you to stream content to the 360.

Give it a go and see what you think...

As long as you convert the files to something the PS3 can read, then it shouldn't matter. If you want to put the files on HDD, then perhaps copy them across via a USB HDD or compatible large capacity media card, such as SD or CF.

It means it cannot read the file extension. Convert it to MP4, then once you begin to stream it will allow you to save to the PS3's HDD, just as if downloading from PSN store.

Video 9 does convert WMV files i do it all the time, not sure what your doing wrong, i just make sure that when converting to MP4 that the bitrate is the same or close to the original file, if i try a higher bitrate it doesn't like it, seems to work fine for me then.

Although I don't really agree with "borrowing" things off the internet, this is what I do with my video files:

1, Download the content (I will use your example) Lost.S03E14.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU.mkv

2, Open up ps3 video 9 and choose "convert file"

    3, Browse to your file

3, choose the option of AVC 720p 3072kbps stereo/160kbps (seems to work best with a nice ratio of file size and time taken to convert)

4, Click on start (as a rule of thumb it normaly takes about as long as the video clip to convert)

5, when it's finished open your burning software I use nero but they are all similar, then I burn it to disc (use an rw so it doesn't get expensive) as a data dvd.

6, Whack it in the ps3 wait a sec for it to be recognised and grab a beer.

i was wondering about this too, if anyone can help ?

some of the torrent sites say, eg:
(Payback.2006.DVD5.720p.BluRay) so i was wondering does it have to be converted first or can it be burnt straight to a dvd-/+r and played in the ps3

Don't understand that. The files I have are a bit-rate of around 10040, whereas Video9 doesn't go that high, does it?
