Try and find some of these ELAC Jets second hand for that price... I have seen second hand ones going a fair few times in the past, I reckon they'd sound very nice at low volumes....

How about using a little subwoofer as well, just to compliment them. I've found a small sub, dialled in very low, and low crossover (say 40hz) does improve the sound.

    Just a thought.

What amp are you using? Preference for silver (like the Elacs) or wood veneer?

    Have a look at these.

They're tiny and have surprisingly good bass. I was really impressed with them at Bristol. Adding a Sub would be an option and would stay within your budget. The matching PMC sub would be the TLE1 but I wasn't as impressed with it as the DB1s.

The ATC Active 10s are fantastic little active monitors (250-watts of quality power amp built in to each speaker) and go for £1260-ish. They'd also spare you having to buy power amps. And they sound stunning, even at low volumes (though you'll want to crank the volume from time to time, to hear what they're really capable of :D )

Alternatively (if you've already got the amplification, for instance), try the new passive ATC SCM-12. Bigger than the 10s, but sealed box so should still suit your needs (ATC's minimonitors have never had problems with small rooms in my experience).

Other suggestions include the Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk. II at £1300ish - really great passive monitor, though you may prefer the 1.1 (it's quite a bit smaller). Acoustic Energy AE1 Mk. II is also very good, as is the Jamo Concert 8. And if you like that sort of things there's always the B&W Nautilus 805, though I suspect it might suit a bigger room.

Also, someone recently mentioned the wee Leema Xen's, and they look good (lots of rave reviews).

For £1200, and with minimonitors in mind, you're into the territory of some of the finest speakers in the world - haven fun. :)

    Cheers,

    Dunc

If you shop around a bit you should be able to find some Nautilus 805s for £1200 (although that wouldn't include stands).

good call on the 1.1's, you could get some nice partington stands too for the rest of your budget and have a really nice pair of speakers which sound great at low levels:smashin:
