Ok. Looking to kill two threads with one stone here.

    My requirements are basically this:

    1. Fanless - I've spent ages making my HTPC virtually silent so this is a must have.

    2. Component Video out - I want to start switching my video with the rest of my kit through my Amp. (will I notice any improvement or degredation over VGA?)

    3. Better PQ than my Saphire ATi 9250SE - At present DVD play back through MCE has some colour banding issues, will a ATi 9600 or nVidia 6600 improve things? If so how much?

    4. AGP

OK. Basically there seem to be two routes:

Ati 96xx and above using the ATi DVI-Component dongle. Does anyone have this solution up and running? If so what card running (Model/Manufacturer etc?). Will I see a difference between a 9600SE or 9600XT (Sapphire Ultimate is fanless). Is the 9800SE better than a 9600XT?

    or

The Gigabyte 6600GT with silentpipe. The PCI-e version is out and comes bundled with a component breakout cable. The AGP version is due any minute but documentation is scarce. Anyone have any feelings on this solution?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Barry

Hi, yes you're right, no-one seems to mention a component connection.
Quiet PC are showing the AGP Gigabyte 660GT (fanless) in stock as from tmrw, I wonder if you could ask them about that?

OK. I think the following two links answer the majority of my questions, and the questions of others on a couple of similar threads doing the rounds.

This is an excellent thread on selecting a graphics card:

    http://htpcnews.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9263

It pretty much covers everything and is very well written.

This is an excellent review of the PureVideo video processor on the 6xxx nVidia cards:

    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2305

In summary pretty much the best card available on the market for VMR9 and hence MCE is the 6600GT. At present Gigabyte do the only silient version, however the AGP version is either out of stock or not yet released. I've found 3 UK suppliers and the price varies hugely:

    http://www.quietpc.com/uk/components.php#gigabyte

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=178511

    http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=3K56&searchphrase=gigabyte 6600gt

The PCI-e card is bundled with a component breakout cable, so I assume the AGP version is too.

    Hope these links help.

Quiet PC are now showing stock of this but they are a whacking £30 more than Dabs so I have placed a back order.

I will post here when I receive it and let you know what my thoughts are.

Could you not get more or less any card and just use a zalman fanless cooler? As far as i'm aware it's a much better silent cooler than any 'fanless' cards actually come with.

Not sure what case Panny has got, but that cooler won't fit in to my Shuttle without taking over the one and only PCI slot :(

Yeah, anything bigger than a shuttle would be fine i'd have thought.

I see you've got the LC10 panny, could you possibly tell me what the cooling is like in that with your A64 in there?
