2012 MacBook Air currently starting up with a folder showing a ?

I’ve started in recovering and attempting to try and erase and restore back to factory settings in the hope this might resolve the issues. Am I doing the right thing or should I do something else?

When entering recovery and going to try and erase, this is all I see, no MacIntoshHDD option and Erase is greyed out so won’t allow it? I’ve attached a picture.

Thanks in advance

A ? folder at startup usually indicates the hard drive is not detected or has failed. Given that the laptop is 8 years old this is very likely. The hard drive needs replacing an the operating system needs reinstalling.
Macbooks dating from mid 2012 have internet recovery so if you are lucky you can replace the drive and reinstall the OS that way
