at work we use a program called blanco... basically it applies multiple formats and re-writes over the drive

Specialist programs can completely wipe your data so it's virtually unrecoverable. But a simple (and free) way to keep out Joe Public is to boot from an XP or Vista disk, as if to install XP or Vista, then when it asks you what partition you wish to install to, select the option to delete the partition, this will make all data inaccessible. Then choose to install XP/Vista onto the disk, a hard format will be carried out first, then the OS will go on, making all your previous data extremely difficult to recover unless some pretty expensive utilities are used.

I can't imagine that a person who has just bought your PC will go to so much trouble and expense to see what data you used to have on it, I'm sure all they'll want to do is start using it.

i did this three times due to my hard drive failing on me and then when i got it working again i found a program and recovered 80% of the data i "formatted" with the installs so i dont think this way will work
