Or ideas on improving boot time , as im going to put a pc in my front room and would like to reduce any wait time .

I was thinking about running windows off a flash card though its a pricey option , theres also the ape machine http://www.mini-itx.com/Default.asp (scroll down a bit) running xp embedded though i have a feeling this is going to reduce my flexability in what software i can use . Oh it needs to be powerfull enough to be able to run a nebula card and do all the timeshifting fancy gubbins

    cheers in advance

I was going to suggest a Mini-ITX based solution also. They are looking to bring out a 1.4Ghz C3 CPU somethime this year which will speed things up a bit.

What is it you will need to do other than the Nebula?

The only thing I'd be worried baout power wise would the the PVR stuff maybe whilst doing other things.

Not sure how it all works, but if it's just ripping the Mpeg2 stream it should work ok.

Not sure how it stacks up but I get along fine with a P3 1.4GHz running Dscaler with tomsmocomp as digiTv happily records in the background.

Hi thanks for the re-asssurance on speed it widens my possibilities . My main issue is fast booting / bios playing of music/dvd from both opticle and hd .... im sure its possible but tracking down a non pre built solution is a problem

Why not leave it permanently on? I have 4 PCs on my home LAN on 24/7, including the HTPC, a P4 2.4GHz with Nebula and Vidac VMagic for archiving VHS/Sky+ to DVD

Hi yeah thats an option (as is hibernation) , the only issues are
Firstly due to being a bit of a guilt ridden greenpeace reject i object to leaving things on if there not doing anything and Secondly hibernation wise my experience is that some software has problems when you resume.

Also i know what i want to do is technicaly possible and the fact i cant do it bugs me ....

Hi im new to this forum and HTPC's but definately not new to Pc's in general..

Basically faster booting up times cam be gained by using plenty on fast memory (eg 1Gb), its not too expensive these days and a fast hard drive, I would recomend using a SATA 150 drive if you can find a reasonably priced motherboard with SATA on board.
