Currently have a 2003 Astra 2.2 SRi - it owes me nothing and is worth about the same. Only has 42k on the clock, is immaculate and has just sailed through the MOT. I just taxed for another year at £280. I have a towbar on it for a small trailer - tip and DIY store runs mainly.

But I have itchy feet.... I want to buy something else...

I have upto £10k to spend but would be more comfortable if I spent less. I could replace the Astra with another car, or I could buy something in addition - a toy.

If I replace it then the replacement needs to have around 8.5 sec 0-60, cruise control, the ability to fit a towbar, £280 quid a year or less to tax and return around 30mpg combined and ideally 3 door with a boot big enough for weekly shopping.

If I buy a toy then the towbar would not be required, but would still like to cap the tax at £280 a year, mpg not as important either, nor is the boot space - performance and grin factor would obviously still be very important.

    Current thoughts..

Replace - Focus Titanium, Astra SRi, Mondeo Titanium, Golf, BMW 1 series

Toy - Focus ST, Astra VXR, Audi TT, Mini Cooper S, MX-5, SLK, Z3

Am I missing something? being silly? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated :smashin:

There's something that just doesn't sit right with me - 0-60 and a towbar

I keep picturing caravan drag racing :D

Surely you could pick any car that does 0-60 in the time required, and just fork out £500 on a tow bar?

I'm not necessarily looking for one with a towbar already fitted - im happt to buy one once I have the car. The one on my astra I bought new and fitted myself for £165.

The trouble is you can't physically get a towbar for a focus st, civic type r, mondeo st, astra vxr, audi tt, cooper s etc.

Most of these vehicles are either not rated for a towbar as they are the flagship performance model in the range, or they don't make one to fit due to rear diffusers or centre exhausts - even if you bodged one to fit, insurance would be invalid as the vehicle isn't rated for towing.

I'm not necessarily worried about 0-60 whilst dragging something round on the towbar - this accounts for approx 10-15% of my annual mileage.

The rest of the year I like to explore the accelerative potential of the machine on a regular basis

Nice car but not the best looking IMHO

330d fits the bill without remapping :smashin:

I'd appreciate a carpet in whatever I choose

Can't see one of these beauties making the £280 tax bracket though.

What about a Mercedes c350cdi or c320cdi, they tick all your boxes. Instead of a Z3 why not go for the newer Z4?

330d or 330i depending on the miles you do.
the mondeo is a good car (had one for a year) needs to be in Titanium or Tit X spec. THe 2.5 turbo petrol wont do 30mpg. So that leaves you with the 2L diesel or 2.2 diesel which to be honest arent the fastest although i think under 9 seconds.
    Mazda 6?

Ignoring the 30mpg and £280 a year tax completely Lol , I've just bought a 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Hatchback

They do a tow bar for it , detachable so it's not so noticeable

I absolutely love everything about it, the handling, equipment ,unbelievable grip gives real confidence , practical, 5 proper seats and a boot

No turbo lag at all , 2nd gear is fantastic

£10 a week for tax is what some people spend a day on fags , does 20ish round town and 30-35 out of town though MPG is directly related to the size of smile

Mazda 3 MPS - 260bhp, 0-60 in 6.1, all the toys inc cruise (which the focus st and the astra vxr don't have) 30mpg, £280 tax (2009 on), built on focus mechanicals AND you can fit a tow bar.

Sorted - now just got to find me a mint one :)
