Having decided it was time to upgrade my current setup, starting with the AV Receiver. I'm now wishing I hadn't bothered. Technics SA-DX1050 Aging Mission 761 (Looking to replace with M72) M7C1 (Looking at M7C2 and moving 7C1 to rear centre) M7DS M70AS Tosh 220E DVD CD/MD to follow. I took a trip to the local RS (Newcastle upon Tyne) where after some deliberation between a Marantz SR5300 (£320) or a Sony 1080 (£370) and a bit of sales chat with my requirements being 50/50 movies/music, came away with the Sony. 14 Day return policy and was looking at upto £400 anyway. It was quickly returned. I couldn't get any bass out of it. Tried everything. Sub Boost in amp on +10db, Sub turned upto full, all speakers against the wall. Still nothing. The mid and treble were crisp and clear though. Took it back to RS. On their system, Sub to +10db. Crank volume upto -20db before the bass arrived. They said it must be the way it's designed. (didn't have another to test against) I can't even run at that volume in the house so swapped for the last Marantz, and saved myself £50. And so the problems continue. When listening to CD's through the DVD player, all is good. Better tuner signal than the Sony. Play a DVD and it suffers a 1.5-2 second delay between the picture starting and sound, Menu's lose sound. Have tried Optical and Coax connections, setting the sound mode on the Marantz rather than using Auto. Am going to give Sony and Marantz a ring in the morning, see what they have to say about the respective problems. But what to do from here? I love the sound of the Marantz, but the sound sync problems bug me to pieces and isn't really acceptable on this level of equipment. Looking around the forum, it seems hit and miss as to whether it's a problem, I certainly don't suffer from any high-pitch whines. I'm unable to comment on the Sony sound but master volume at -20db to get bass seems crazy. The remote and usability are better though. Has anyone else suffered these problems? Is the delay problem something that affects the whole Marantz range or have RS received older stock? Is it necessary to crank the Sony to such a high volume to get any bass out of it? I'm reluctant to purchase another Sony as returning it might be a nightmare, and if the Marantz problem is hit and miss how many are needed to get a hit?
