I have Sky+ and mirror sub for my dad with standard sky. Can I buy a standard sky+ box and get him all Sky+ features or can I plug in a hard drive recorder or TIVO type device? Thanks

You can swap the digibox for a SKY+ (it will need the extra LNB feed) and the SKY+ sub will be included in your multiroom subscription so no extra per month to pay.

You can of course connect any external recording device to a digibox, the facilites and ease of use being down to the individual recorders specs.

Each Sky+ box will need 2 LNB feeds.
You can add TiVo to control a Sky+ box, but things get complicated as both will want to change channels at the same time if you want Sky+ to record two things at a time.
So you have to be careful when you want TiVo to record something or Sky+ to record. You could disable TiVos' channel change control of Sky+ though.
This is not a problem if you only use Sky+ to record one channel, as it will switch to the second tuner if it gets a channel change request from TiVo.

Probably easier to have two Sky+ boxes and another Sky box which is solely controlled by TiVo so you get the best of both worlds.

For best flexibility and PVR features, nothing beats TiVo.
However there are plenty of cheaper DVD and Hard disk recorders around.

Just make sure it records RGB for good quality.
