Headphones for series X

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on these once you've had a bit more time with them and played a few games. Been considering a new headset for a while, and my plantronics rig 400 have served me well for what I paid for them, but my chat has started crackling apparently so could be time to replace soon and really like the Arctis line...

I haven't noticed anything like crackling.

Played Titanfall 2 multiplayer with Party Chat for a few hours.

The games default audio was way too high and I couldn't hear what people in my party chat were saying. Once I turned the in game audio all the way down I got a good mix of party chat and in game audio. The chat was clear and the people on the other side could hear me clearly too.

I also played some Doom Eternal campaign, the audio again was clear.

Not sure where best to post this but this seems like as good a first port of call as any!

I use Lucidsound LS30s with the X1X. They connect via the optical port to a USB dongle, which then connects to the headset.

Series X has no optical port so I'm guessing that renders the LS30s useless. Am I off the mark, or is there maybe some other workaround? I'd prefer not to have to buy another set of headphones 😕

Ta!

can they plug into the controller using the headphone cable ? I think that might be your only option. Some Vendors have patched or released something to fix this but I cannot see one for those headphones.

The workaround is for lucidsound to get a patch that lets the headset get sound direct from USB. Astro have done this with their headsets. I've no idea if this is possible for the LS30 - if they are even updateable and whether lucidsound plan to do this?

The only other way as said above is if you can plug straight into the controller.

Now - the thing with Lucidsound is they've released a whole new line of headsets for the Series X/S and PS5 yet don't really mention anything about their older products and compatability..so you might be out of luck....

Yeah, I saw Astro had said they'd be patching their kit, and that Lucidsound had put out a range of XSX specific headsets, so I assumed that they wouldn't be following Astro's example.

I was hoping I may have missed something or there was a less obvious workaround. Seemingly not 😐 Thanks anyway.

Ho hum. Off to read back through the thread to see what to replace them with. That'll go down well with SWMBO 🙄

Can you wire them in to the controller or is that not possible?

Don't immediately know, TBH.

I'll have to dig the box out of the loft and see what other cables came with them, and what the instructions say.

I don't know this particular headset, but can you connect to the optical on your TV or monitor if it has one?

Thinking about getting some new headphones to go with the incoming series x, currently using Jabra Evolve 80 which has been great (nothing wrong with them!) Just fancied a new set. The new TB Stealth 700 v2 and the SteelSeries Arctis 9X and Arctis Pro Wireless have caught my eye!
But I'm not sure they will be any better than the Jabra 80 I currently have!?
Happy to take any recommendations, no budget! :D

Just a word of warning, i have three pairs of LucidSound LS35X headphones for our family and each one of them has broken where the headphones side extension goes up and down (google it, i'm not alone on this problem), they are very badly designed, also one of the mics has stopped working......i have contacted LucidSound over 6 times now and have never had a reply to my e-mails.

Stay clear and do yourself a favor and buy something else......great headphones just a bad design.

Think i might just buy 3 x Turtle Beach Stealth 600X GEN2 to replace them, pretty cheap and if they do break it's not as bad as buying the more expensive ones.

I have the Arctis 9x's. While I'm not a audiophile I consider them excellent. Was playing Halo 5 campaign recently and when pulsing to search for Intel you get a 3d audio response and I was able to get a full 360 effect in the audio to find which direction the Intel was.

The Bluetooth feature is great for listening to music while playing or indeed bringing up a video walkthrough you can listen to off your phone without having to put a earcup to one side.

The game/chat mixer allows you to fine tune the chat and game sound balance and the overall volume has always been fine for me and I've always had a bit extra left but it would feel uncomfortable being louder.

Finally the mic is clear and the mute button handy. I easily get 8 hours out of them before going back on charge.

Given the Xbox will stream Atmos or Sonic for Windows to any headset I don't see what value a headset would give you on these consoles that advertised it as a feature as every headset would have it.

I picked mine up for about £150 last year and I consider them great value for the price.

I am about to pull the trigger in these for the Series X, one question, will they work on the PS5 too, via the wireless windows dongle thing?

9x are Xbox and Bluetooth only.

9 are PS and Bluetooth only.

7x are Xbox and PS compatible (although SS market them as a Xbox headset) but no Bluetooth.

7p are PS and no Bluetooth

Think all work with PC (9x with an adaptor - additional purchase)).

Steelseries need to have a sleeker and less confusing product lineup. Personally, I didn't like the set I bought so returned them but for a wireless set (9) they were ok.

@chillo I have the Arctis Pro Wireless which amazon dropped to £205 on prime day (so might be worth looking on black friday). I havent used them on either of my consoles yet but on the PC there really good. Personally I have use for the DAC with additional inputs and outputs and the bluetooth connectivity so they fit my usage perfectly and sound great.

Also they have been patched to work when connected to the PS5 using usb to the base station and wireless to the headphones, but for Xbox there via 3.5mm into the controller like any normal headphones.

I believe WhiteHartMart's post answered everything. I only game on Xbox so multi platform was not a consideration. The dongle free operation was an attraction along with forward compatibility with Xbox Series X.

So I've never gamed with headphones! Just always played on the TV and the wife doesn't mind what's on.

Got a Sonos 5.1 setup so with that, am I missing out on anything?

The wife has got me these for Christmas. Don’t need anything amazing and wanted wired to plug into the controller for Dolby Atmos.
No idea how good they are but they seem to get very reviews so we shall see.

Thank you, so would you recommend the 7x then if I just wanted one set to use on both consoles?

If it absolutely has to be a wireless set on both consoles then that's an option as is perhaps the new Astro A20 with an additional USB dongle so it works on both.

Still think neither will sound as good as a reasonable wired set using just the controllers but understand some really do want fully wireless.

Yeah, I want wireless.

Yeah, I want wireless.

Yea - it's the 7x (shown on the SS website as also compatible with the PS5) or the Astro A20 with 2 USB dongles - Astro a little cheaper but haven't heard them.

I'd assume the 7x sound like the 9 I tried (they all use the same drivers I think) which did sound better than the Gen 1 Astro A20 I tried - not sure what the new A20s are like though.

I like the gen2 A20’s. Very clear and sharp sound. Easy to use. I reckon the Arctis ones might sound better but I haven’t tested them so can’t say. I just like the Astro sound mix. Love the crystal clear mids.

hey guys,

i have lucid sound ls35x and thinking of getting a new headset for the series x release...

i see a couple of headsets i like and are newly released

corsair HS75 XB and has dobly atmos
or
steel series artic 7x or 9x

i did read before the artic headsets don't go very loud and the lucid sound went louder thats why i went for them but ii would like a new headset and wondered if there's any other people recommend please?

thank you

This is from the Verge review of them:

There isn’t an overwhelming number of wireless gaming headsets that work with Xbox consoles. But compared to some of the newer options, like the $150 SteelSeries Arctis 7X and the $120 Astro A20 Gen 2, the HS75 XB Wireless is a better option when it comes to sound quality, ease of use, and comfort. Not that any of those models are bad, but if you’re particular about attention to fine detail, Corsair’s $150 headset stands out just a bit beyond what’s currently out there.

I need to get a new headset for Series X but it’s hard work when you’ve got an absolute unit of a head. I tried on some of the new Turtle Beach 700 Stealth 2 that my son uses and after I popped my eye ball back in I realised they were too small.

It felt that the vice scene in Casino, one thing I can’t stand is the feeling of my neck being compressed under the ear alongside my jaw like I’m restricting blood flow to my head.

Most “gaming headsets” seem to be closed back and that means clamping force, in saying that I used a pair of Astro A50s for a few years and once extended to max were a comfy headset. I thought about buying some for the Series X but it seems a little wasteful when the X doesn’t have optical, I see you get Atmos free as well so this may be my only option.

Yeah I have the A50's and the new Astro A20's both are pretty comfortable but I reckon you'd not like the A20's as much since the cups don't pivot. Are you really set on wireless - if not I'd buy the A40's that just plug into your controller - you can buy them without the mixamp for £149 (which if you're using atmos mixamp isn't worth it) and they are comfy like the A50's. Ok you've got to plug them into your controller but I reckon for you they'd be a good option. I sort of wish I'd just gone that route and not bothered with the A20's - which are fine just not as comfy.

Might also be worth checking the steelseries out as they have round ear cups so won't put the same pressure on in theory.....
